New Video Card for 775dual-VSTA

I'm looking to purchase an upgrade from my x1950PRO AGP 512MB, as it's starting to artifact. I don't have the money to do a complete overhaul at the moment to move to a complete PCI-E 16x motherboard, so I'm just going to find a decent PCI-Ecard that's compatible with my mobo and that'll help me transition from the 775dual-VSTA to another board at some point.

I've been looking around, and I know the HD 3870s seem to work without problems as long as I have the latest motherboard BIOS version (which I do) but the better 8800 cards all seem to have issues. I don't have another board to flash from GEN2 to GEN1, so that kind of cuts me out of those, but the Asrock site does list the 8800GTS 320M MSI card as compatible. You can't really find those around anymore, though. 512s and 640s are all that I can seem to find in the ways of 8800GTS cards.

So any ideas on what card to purchase? Keep in mind that I can't flash from GEN2 to GEN1 for cards like the 8800GT since I don't have another computer available.

Forgive me for my comfusion but exactly what are you doing here? Are you just buying a card for now and holding on to it until you can get a board that supports it?

I'm looking for a PCI-E video card that's compatible with the 775dual-VSTA. By default it should be compatible with most PCI-E boards, such as one I'd buy in the future.

sorry the hybrid board kinda caught me off guard lol

youshould be fine with an HD3870. Granted the chipset on your current board is probably not going to deliver that best performance boost but since you are updating the entire system eventually any way i think you SHOULD be fine.

I haven't heard about the issues with the new 8800s a whole lot so thats news to me. Also the 9 series cards might be worth a second or two of your time. To be honest I haven't really looked at how they stack up the the 8800 line but they seem similarly priced to the 8800GT

Thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking about getting an HD 3870 awhile ago but I started thinking about 8800s and such. I think I'll just go with the 3870 though, since it works on my motherboard, is fairly cheap, and provides a nice boost in performance from my x1950.

yeah i think thats a good idea for your case. Also, as you update the rest of your system you can use it later which is ALWAYS a plus
