i disagree..

Surge protection only is not a good enough system for generally any electronic device.. specially for brown out/surge sensitive eletronics such as computers.

Surge bars (i've yet to see any even high quality bars prevent brown out situations)..

A UPS with the ability to see flux in power one way or another is the only way to go.

As there are generally everyone running a surge bar on all electronics.. yet a pile of people continue to have problems.

I've had computers come in with recent or even new surge bars between it and the plugin which have completed been toasted due to brown outs or something in which the surge bar couldn't prevent. It's not a solid stop gap, it's only a "better" then straight up directly being plugged in.

with AVR alone, it can save you problems.

Another factoid is, reguardless of a surge bar, UPS, AVR and any conceiveable number of preventive measures, nothing can stop lightning, your dealing with something that arcs from the sky to the earth, it's not going to be unable to "arc" with a surge bar or ups.

If it's far enough down the line, it'll be treated like a normal surge, if it's closer, your best bet is to cross your fingers.

I actually had sold a guy over a year and a half ago, a APC UPS for his computer.

just last month, he got a whole new computer (not from me). And not even a week later, lightning strike, result, his walls, floors, were scorged through where the household wireing ran on the other side. What was plugged into the plugins were litterly blown out of the plugins. His UPS BY APC batter popped, dripping battery acid onto the floor and burning a hole in the floor, ontop of that, his entire computer and everything connected to the ups, were also fried just like everything else in the house.

But heres the nice thing:

He had callled me asking what he should do considering the ups had "warranty" up to $75,000 gurantee.

I told him to give APC a call and explain the situations.

I later was told that after getting ahold APC, they are going to replace his APC UPS with a newer, better model due to the previous model no longer being available, And being that this guy had house insurance, informed him that anything that house insurance isn't willing to replace (that was connected to the UPS) APC would pay in full to replace.

That's PRETTY damn nice considering that he didn't spend any time on the phone at all from what i understood.

That's a nice story at the end. (the bit about the customer , not the lightning strike).

Im gonna go with APC Back-UPS RS-1000

It's a lot of money but I guess it's an investment. It'll have to wait a few weeks while I make the mortgage application. They've got a trade-up system going too for your old UPS

Edit: Just had a very interesting disussion with myself and I'm not getting that model now. I need to discuss further in depth before finalising my choice

Yeah, to re-iterate above, what Judas says is true. The simple surge only stuff is good for just the surge part, but brownouts and over voltages are not able to be handled by that type of setup.

We do offer, as he mentioned, the EPP (Equipment Protection Policy) and data recovery with our products.

Also, I would recommend the 1500 unit for the amount of equipment you have on there, with PFC power supplies you most likely would end up overloading that unit when your computer turns on/switches states.

I know they are kinda pricey, but as we like to reference it, if you spend 3 grand on a computer, do you buy a 10$ device to protect it? Probably not.. hehe.

Any other questions feel free to post em!
