EEK! IM in TROUBLE

I was trying to get my sata drive working by doing a xp pro repair. I had the choice of full install or upgrade. I clicked on upgrade hoping it would carry me to the repair screen. It never did, It just started installing the upgrade. It never asked me what drive to put it in,or give me the warning that it would ease everything...All my wifes pictures is on that drive..If I let go ahead and install the upgrade will I lose everyting, or just update the system...

If your pics are in the My Documents folder, say goodbye to them.

BUT, you should back up the files no matter what!

The upgrade option is supposed to keep all your files and folders in tact, whilst upgrading the core system files.
I've never bothered upgrading before though i just reach straight for the clean install so i'm not too experienced with it.
The upgrade will probably replace everything on C:\ by default.

Nooope. I'd suggest installing XP or vista on another HDD, then booting off that and hooking up the second drive. Then you might be able to salvage the pictures if possible and repair the other drive?

norton ghost is an acclaimed software program that helps me and I can assume a lot of Windows users got their work done in the past, for years. lol.

IMO they can't get a firewall or spyware program right but they did a good job on this one. I like Norton Ghost its what i use currently for all my OS backup stuff.

Unless there's something better out there to aquire im sticking with this

I would recommend Norton Ghost, like ppl have said, it saves so much time.
Or alternatively, Acronis True Image is a great solution as well - it has an easy interface, and is quite fast at doing entire backups (or images).

An upgrade will not erase your documents or picture files
It will only replace the system files.

Norton Ghost is about the only good product Norton makes, that is if your into imaging, and backups

I personally dont do any of that because I have everything installed on separate HDD, the only thing that gets nuked is my OS.

unfortunately when you need to reinstall your OS, although all the programs are on a seperate drive, you still need to reinstall them again

not entirely true. I've had my 'normal' programs on a separate drive for quite some time now, and have done some re-installs of the OS a couple of times.
The programs on the separate drive still work, although they don't show up on the start menu and the install/uninstall menu.
