Problem with CPU upgrade
I recently bought the Newegg.com - AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops to upgrade from my AMD Athlon 64 3200+. After installing it, nothing happens when i turn on the computer. The lights on the motherboard turn on but when i press the power button it doesnt start up. I checked my motherboard and stuff before hand and my motherboards socket is AM2 so that shouldnt be the problem. Also when i put in my old CPU everything works perfectly. I'm not sure what model motherboard it is since it's a Dell and it doesnt show what it is in CPU z. Anybody have any ideas?

Well the bios on the board may not be capable of using the processor. Also, are you sure that the cooling fan and paste were attached to the cpu properly? Sometimes that can be an issue. It's going to be hard to tell with an oem dell board. have you tried putting the old proc back in to see if you have different results? I wouldn't be inclined to believe the cpu is doa, but its always possible.
Maybe if you give us more info on what the hardware is, the dell box model and such we can see if there should be any way for this to work properly ![]() -Syn

That new CPU is using AM2 socket and the old A64's uses S939 that is totally different socket. AM2 uses DDR2 RAM when S939 uses DDR and there are few other differences also. So now you need new motherboard that has AM2 socket. Here's one : Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-MA770-S3 AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards
