Because Creative can't release a decent driver for the last 20 years and I am sick of them. No more Creative soundcards. I will use it only for the next couple of months that I will still have my desktop and to have the xbox 360 output sound through the front panel of the x-fi (Aux In the more correct term).
So...how can I do it?

Yes it is ,just under sounds in vista set the driver to default when you connect to the xbox360.
If under XP it gets harder ,just go the AUDIO tab and in the drop down select the device driver and reboot. I have used 2 cards in my system the Audigy for games and the HD on board for Blu ray playback. I have it set up in both OS`s .My vista is for movies and xp is for games.Yeah i know I am trying to game under vista bit it is on a 64 gig HD :-{ If i get a new 500 gig it will be going on that and used more for games. |

Hmm, one of us don't get the other I think.
Headphones plugged in the realtek audio. All sounds must be able to be heard from that pair. Xbox 360 audio out is connected to the front panel of the X-Fi. Windows sees that connection as Aux 2. If have set up the X-Fi as the main playback card and have the Aux2 not mute, then I can hear the Xbox. If I have the Realtek as main playback then no matter what I can't hear the Xbox. Is it possible to make this work? Under windows XP.

uh no,how can Windows use 2 drivers at ounce without BSOD? You have to remember windows only handles one driver at a time.I was under the assumption that you wanted to play you xbox sperate from the realtek.
say does your case have front panel ports?,Why not take the X-Fi out and use the line in for the realtek would save some power and the headache of having the X_Fi in . |

I don't want to use the X-Fi for anything else.

Think about what you just said
Does Windows not load more than one driver when it boots? You need a driver for the CPU, the storage subsystem, partition mounters, the NTFS file system, the networking components, the graphics card, and pretty much every peripheral connected to the system, not to mention drivers for pseudo devices and other such things.I think what you meant to say was "How can Windows use 2 drivers at once for the same device?". BlueMak is using two different sound devices. You can get this to work. If you want to use the Realtek sound for playback and the line in on the XFi for the line in, simply set the Realtek to be the default playback device and the XFi to be the default recording device, then under the volume control for the XFi, select line in as the source under the Recording section, then under the Playback section unmute the Line in option (you may need to go to options and check the box to enable the volume control for the line in playback). That should work for what you want to do. I've done similar things. It might require some fiddling around but it should work. |

Yeah I did that before deciding to give up on it, but it didn't work. Hardly surprised since we are talking about Creative's software. Thank you, but as I said, no more soundblaster for me. I uninstalled all the drivers and software and disabled the device in the device manager. I will just need to get a cable extension to make what I want work.

i've been abel to run up to 4 soundcards with no issues
what you need to do BlueMak, if you still want ot use the X-fi for the X360 - you'll need to use an analogue connection from the X-Fi's front output to the line input of your onboard sound - you can then use the realtek driver/mixer to send that signal to your headphones there's no real way to do this in software unfortunately (though you could probably work something out with digital connections too if the realtek has spdif input)

That's a good idea, but yeah, I have given up on it. I prefer stability and uniform performance than this box of surprises.
Thanks anyway.

I run onboard and X-Fi Prelude currently... the onboard sound runs my headset, and the prelude runs my speakers.
