What version of windows we are talking about in here? And when you re-installed the windows did you install newest chipset drivers?

It looks entirely possible that it may have been wiped out.

I would unplug the drive now until it has been deduced that something else is the problem, because if it were me I'd assume the drive got wiped.

There are services that try to restore drive contents, but they are not cheap and you pay weather they recover anything or not. Reformatting that drive wouldn't "kill" it, You should be able to use your USB drive again but I would kiss your photos goodby.

Peace,

Can you post screen shot of the device manager, I need to know if it says it's formated or not. If it is just click the drive with mouses 2nd button and make it active partition.

It sounds like the partition was deleted. Until you create a new one on that drive it won't show up. So, in "Disk Management" you need to create a new partition for that drive. Once you do it will show up in My Computer as a usable drive.

Something else you can try if you are having problems is to have Windows rescan for drives, and you do this by going into Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management. From the top menu choose "Action", and select "Rescan Disks". This should get Windows to detect that you have a drive without a partition on it, and then start up the Access Wizard to setup the drive for use. You can also try removing the drive in Device Manager, disconnect the drive from the computer, and reconnect it. That should do pretty much the same thing as Windows should detect it as a new device.

Having said that in the first place would have made your original post that much more informative... ergo, you would have received better, more helpful suggestions (being that they would be aimed toward sorting out the problem you are having).

Just for future reference, describing the problem in more detail almost always helps
