Best dvd format?
I'm a total noob with these dvd formats, but I would like to know which format is the best to use if I want to play them on regular home dvd players? I can burn on DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD+R/DVD+RW disks.
Thanks for any help or tips

I personally have found that the DVD+R and DVD+RW is the most compatible. But if you want to be sure on your home DVD player go to VCDhelp.com and look up your model of home DVD player. It is pretty acurate at telling you what format works on your model of DVD Player.

I have a dvd-ram that's double sided, but not double-layered.
Besides, I don't think consumer burners are capable of burning such double-layered media or are they? Anyway, if you had gone with a "-r" drive you could get a 50 pack of dvd-r's for $40, maybe even cheaper if you looked hard enough. Oh, and -r's cannot be burned on a +r drive and vice versa unless you have a Sony dvd+/-rw drive.~eyeguy616 |

Here at one of the wholesale stores I can get a 50 pack of +R's for $32.... best price in town...heheh last time I was there I bought 3 packs.....Everywhere else around here they are about $42-50. At work we have +R/RW and a -R/RW drive and all of us at work preferr the +R/RW.... We have had more luck with them and have found more DVD players (home units) that actually accept the + format over the -.

Yeah I seen those too and they were alittle cheaper at Best Buy, but on the above website they recommended to use DVD+R on my DVD players, so it was they only choice. Also I think my drive burns all formats and it's a TDK Indy, so I don't think sony's are the only one's capable

I usually buy Fuji and I have found my best prices at Sam's Club. Once and a great while you can catch a nice sale @ Best Buy but not often. My DVD is a TDK Indi 420N and I love it. Got it on sale when it was first released for $225. I wanted a Sony but they were so back orderd I just gave up.

I bought my dvd-r's at http://www.livewarehouse.com . Damnit! I've been acting like an advertisement for them and they haven't paid me!!
Seriously though, it's $40 for a 50-pack of 2x dvd-r general media. 4x is made with a different process making it much more expensive, so I stuck to getting the 2x burner with cheap 2x media. See sig for the drive, which I also bought at the same website.~eyeguy616 Edit: krazy1, is this the drive you bought? Great speed for a really good price the way you got it, but no dvd-r writing capabilities, unless your model is different. Last edited by eyeguy616; May 22, 2003 at 06:24 AM. |

I have the Sony dual format drive, and like everyone else I have had much better luck with the +R vs -R, even though alot of the newer home units seem to support both these days. You can also find good deals at CompUSA when they run their DVD media 50% off. Its usually every ad, and they rotate brands that are on sale. This week is Fuji, 10 for $14.99.
