Nanotechnology may find its way into warfare one day
an interesting article I read on california computer news site today.
Quote:
Based on the promises and prospects of nanotechnology, researchers at MIT were awarded a five-year $50 million research grant to develop a lightweight molecular uniform that can heal, shield, and protect the American foot soldier against biological and chemical warfare. A matching grant from private industry will make this project a very lucrative source of new technology according to the April 2002 MIT Research Digest web.mit.edu/newsoffice/rd.
According to Zyvex http://www.zyvex.com, innovators in nanoscience, nanotechnology allows us to "snap together the fundamental building blocks of nature easily, inexpensively and in almost any arrangement that we desire." As Zyvex puts it, each and every manufactured product we use is made from atoms. No exception. On a crude level, we can see that nature "mixes dirt, water and air to make a potato." Yet, on a more sophisticated level, if we "rearrange the atoms in sand" and add a few other elements we make computer chips.
Products manufactured by nanotechnology promise to be "cleaner, stronger, lighter and more precise." Researchers at MIT foresee a uniform that acts as an exoskelaton to the human form, providing everything the foot soldier needs to survive in the field of battle.
