Computer troubles

Hey The long wait is over, all of my components have finally arrived, and windows does not want to install.

installing Vista, I get to the screen where it asks you where you want to install the OS. Once I get past that, I'm stuck; it hangs at "Copying Windows Files (0%)", and then gives me the error:

Windows could not assign a drive letter to a partition on Disk 0. The specified disk does not exist. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error code: 0x80300025

Any ideas?

Can you post your computers specifications? I assume you are using SATA drive. What SATA mode you have on? AHCI, IDE or RAID?

This is a common problem with Intel chipsets when AHCI is enabled. If AHCI is enabled, you should disable it during the installation. After the installation is done you can enable it again and you won't face any problems.

Copied from my old post

Case:
CM Stacker 830 evo [purchased]
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
RAM: Corsair XMS2 2x2GB
MB: Gigabyte EP45-DS3R P45
HDD: WD Caviar SE16 640GB
Optical: Samsung SH-S223F Black SATA DVD+RW
PSU: Corsair TX650W

Additionally, I have tried an old ATA optical from my old PC with the same result, and XP will not install either.

As for drive configuration, where would I find that at, I think that I'm using IDE mode currently? I know I'm not using RAID.

Look in the BIOS what mode is set for the SATA interface and make sure it's in IDE or you would need to load the intel drivers during the install...

Went into BIOS, and SATA RAID/AHCI Mode was Disabled

For both controllers, right? I think your motherboard has two, the Intel southbridge controller and one secondary (Marvell I think).

Try using another SATA port. If your motherboard has a secondary controller, try that port instead. Its easy to recognize, the port's color will be different.

All of my SATA ports are the same color

And I didn't see any other AHCI settings, I'll check again in a second.

Double posting, sry

update though, after pounding on the keyboard for 10mins /crying I think I've found the BIOS option. It just didn't click the first time that I saw it, but SATA 0-3 are now running in IDE mode.

Should my cables be plugged into specific ports? I got the same error.

HDD = SATA 0
DVD = SATA 1

No, it shouldn't matter. You did format the disk and start the installation from scratch, right?

After a ridiculous long wait, I got the message "No drives were found. Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation".

Now it sounds more odd... If I recall right Vista should have support for the AHCI mode by default. At least I've been able to install Vista to SATA drive in AHCI operating mode without installing the intel driver. I have IHC9R and you have IHC10R....

Hmmm ridiculously long wait...you can see the disk being recognized in the BIOS, right?

Do you have another SATA cable which you can replace the HDDs cable with? And make sure that the power connector is well attached too.

Ya, I can see the HDD in the BIOS

New SATA cable, new SATA power (same cord though), made sure that all the connections were solid; trying again.

EDIT: looks like that worked, Vista seems to be installing. I'll report back with it's success/failure in... however long this will take Oo

Well, it seems that there must have been a bad SATA cable, windows is up and running...

I had tried my old IDE HDD last night after the install failed but made no progress. (It was on its last leg as it was, so it may have just been the timing that it didn't work... With that being the case, I never thought to change the cables myself)

Thank you temeteus82 and Grace for your help on this
