System Specs

e8600 or Q9550

With Intel having just dropped the prices on the Wolfdale and Yorkfield processors I'm finding myself very tempted to upgrade my processor. The only problem is that I can't decide which would be a better choice for me. The are pretty close in price. I've got an Gigabyte GA-X48t-DQ6 with 4 gigs of ram and 2x HIS HD-3780s in CrossFireX setup.

One other quick question as i have never attempted this before. If I only want to replace the processor on my board, is it necessary to reinstall windows again?

general rule of thumb, any quad is better than any dual

get the Q9550

and about windows, usually you dont need to reinstall windows but sometimes your product key is invalidated, it doesnt happen too often but it happens, usually you just call microsoft and get a new key....

drwho, it seems to me since you have more money to spend for Q9550, any reason why you still want to choose between the two CPUs listed on the OP?

SLAWQ = C-1 (old), SLB8V = E-0 (new)

Well, let's just that I have this called upgrade fever and don't know when to quit. I'm probably going to op for the quad-core, but was wondering what the e8600 brought to the table.

i recalled you used to have an E8400, so E8600 will probably overclock better/higher and create less heat than E8400.
if you try it, then post back to tell me how's it going.
