Hi there and welcome to DriverHeaven!

First you posted on a thread that was so old that it was considered as dead by the site rules. So I moved your post to new thread.

Anyway ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) is the industry standard. It defines common interfaces for hardware recognition, motherboard and device configuration and power management.

[EDIT] But you can disable it from the computers BIOS if I'm not mistaken.

It was a while I messed with this but if I remember correctly it can get problematic if one installs Windows with ACPI turned off in the BIOS and then tries to start up Windows with ACPI enabled, or the other way around.

Yeah I remember that I saw warning is some BIOS that changing the feature after OS is installed would cause problems.

Basically, to target your question specifically, it will enable you to have the computer turn back on after a power event.

So if you lose power, and the computer shuts down as a result, when it comes back you can enable it to power on when power returns.

This is also a feature that many UPS's also work with. While a UPS won't turn your computer back on, when it sends a shutdown signal to the OS (from a power outage etc.) it signals a graceful power condition, telling your OS/BIOS that yes, were shutting down normally, however it is due to power problems so when power returns, turn me back on!

This is totally dependant on your BIOS settings however, and it would do the same if it was a hard shutdown from power loss, as long as you have the settings set correctly.

ACPI in general does allot more, but it seemed as if your question was directed to this portion in particular, hope that answers it a bit.
