SSDs
The price for them are still much higher, but ever since I understood how much more resilient they are and probably not going to break down as often as normal HDDs, I would love to use them as main HDDs in any future PC build by me. Not for storage so much, since the cost is prohibitive, but as regular C drive or games drive, should be fine.
Do we (by we I mean any of you) have any info on how large they are going to get, how fast and how cheap?

They're already being installed as standard in some laptops and pcs. You can already buy 256GB really easily. They're going to get bigger fast. And production increases with the number that are being sold and soon (a year or two) they will be mass-produced and dirt cheap.

imo i would sit and wait a good year or 2 at least before investing in one.... as it's still a new technology and worth waiting to see how things work out over the next few years...
The size of the drives is likely to be unlimited and expontentially capable of higher speeds and larger sizes where as the real hard disk is getting more difficult to tweak for more speed and more space.

the next few years... ?
this kind of technology moves so fast you won't probably have to wait that long (i hope). |

it is indeed fast... but usually a major change in tech like this with only paper reliability estimates makes for a possible problem down the road if for example.... they have a high failure rate or considerable problems down the road.

From what i've heard they are a headache in vista and imo they are too expensive per gigabyte. I would stick with a velociraptor and give the ssd's a more time to get bigger and let the price drop.

i'm sticking with my seagate 7200.11's... as they are still outperforming... at least for me..... even the newest raptors and WD drives.

yeah I would definitely wait in a year for price drops and let the bugs get worked out of those things first.

Current SSD's suffer from 2 problems. First is the onboard controller the majority of them use is causing awful problems for most SATA controllers.
They discuss the Jmicron controller issues here AnandTech: Intel X25-M SSD: Intel Delivers One of the World's Fastest Drives The second is the OS. OS are just not SSD friendly. Read/writes are still organized the to benefit normal HDDs. |

That's not realkly a problem with the SSD though. That's more the current boards, OS and controllers not adequately supporting a relatively new product. Always been then same. Take another year probably before it is properly corrected.

I was talking about the actual controller on the SSD itself. So yes the SSD is kinda problem.

Isn't the controller oin the SSD one that has merely been 'rehashed' for the SSD as opposed to purpose-built for a new product? I'm probably wrong but I thought that was the case.
Good article btw on andandtech.

I have a few SSDs here and I really find it hard to recommend them. if you spend time configuring the OS you can get them running well, but the cost far outweighs the minor performance differences.
Most of the speeds you see are run from benchmark programs and they perform great there, but in real world usage there is still some work to be done. They will be the new standard but its a little way off IMO. Hang fire for the next generation. (I havent played with Intel's yet). |
