I actually wanted to choose two: The 8800gt as the nVidia solution and 4870 as the ATI solution. In the end I settled for 4870...

gtx260 hands down. I've played with both the 4870 and the 260 and the 260 gives me good AA at a good frame rate, the 4870's plus is that it tops the 260 without AA

Sorry that I didn't put 9800 gt/gtx/gx2, gtx 280/260 As They are REALLY EXPENSIVE and don't acheive the best (p/$) ratio.

So my guess I am the only one who would vote for the 4870x2.

I wouldnt say their price points are that outrageous compared to the comperable ATi cards, by performance index's not release times/top card out. If we get into the x2, then its even more an anyones game. nVidia and crew are out to chop prices, and are doing it fairly agressively. As an example:
GTX260 evga super clocked, 289$ in cart price. Newegg.com - EVGA 896-P3-1262-AR GeForce GTX 260 Superclocked Edition 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards ASUS 4870 255$ Newegg.com - ASUS EAH4870/HTDI/512M Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards -Syn

4870x2 is dirt cheap when you consider it has 2 GPUs. In the bang to buck stake, which is what this thread is about, it could well be the winner. I just voted on what was in the poll though. It is a bit stramge how there is so few nVidia cards in the poll. I reckon op must be a big ATI fanboy-or-girl heh
And why not. They have a long history of great cards. My old ATI 9800 is still being used in my sisters rig.

Yes! Someone who agrees with me! :-p No question about ATI cards, some of their models were great. The main reason I bought my 8800GTS 1.5 years ago was not that I wasn't satisfied with the performance of my X1800XT, but that the amount of noise out of it was too much. I can get used to some noise, but that thing was like a jet plane was patrolling the skies inside the PC case, where my 8800GTS...I can hardly hear it, relatively speaking. Oh, one more reason I would vote for the 4870 is the DirectX 10.1 support.

well my vote was for the ATi 4870. I have always enjoyed ATi's product line and will upgrade soon =).
I also have to agree that ATi are reliable. i still have an X700 running strong in my parents' rig which has yet to hicckup. (Also taking into account that I overclocked the crap out of it when it was new)

Nice
![]() I personally have had nothing but bad luck with any ATi purchase I've made, so I gave up on them and stuck with nVidia, havent been disappointed yet honestly. I will recommend the ATi cards where appropriate, and I don't think that anyone who has one is evil or anything hahaha, more power to your choice! -Syn

Well, I think nvidia is the same as Microsoft now just relasing new products that are not that level of competition( they are only caring about their how to be a trillionaire on some idiots budgets)

I wouldn't go that far really. Their cards certainly aren't sub par. Benching is still pretty competitive really. Now that ATi is starting to again too were seeing more of a price war, and I can't wait to see nVidias answer to the new front line.
Sides, when theres no competition everyone gets 'lazy'. It's just the way of it, why fix what aint broke, as they say. Which is stupid, but makes sense if your competitor can't compete. /shrug -Syn

Was noticing, with the 4870 at $250 and the 4850 at $150, the price difference is just too much for even a 30% or so performance increase - the 4850 has the numbers for performance/value for sure - even comparing to a $100 3870 I believe.

This all depends on your budget. To be honest i have 2 X HD4850 and they are amazing. But if you budget is like 190 then get an OC HD4850... most of the other cards are more pricey. Again what is your budget?

interestingly.... for me.. the hd4850 compared to the hd4870 is only a 30ish percent different in price....

Check out the toxic HD4850 from sapphire... quite amazing for the price with zalman already installed and factory OC'd IT handles quite well for the price.

yes I agree that 4870 is quite expensive compared to the little increase from the 4850 performance
