Seagate Free Agent Pro 1TB
Bought two yesterday.
Already copied about 170GB of data. The casing gets hot to the touch after minutes of copying, not sure if it is normal and if it is just the case that perhaps it works as a heatsink or the drive itself is that hot. I can't seem to find a way to check the temperature of the HDD in there so I am a bit worried. I did a checkdisk, quick check with HDtune, used the building in unitiliies by Seagate to check the drive and used the SeaTools to check the drive before copying files to it and all said the drive is fine. Should I take their word for it? I am afraid deleting the original copies yet, that I must cause this desktop PC will probably be sold. I connect it though USB than firewire or esata that I don't have. Speed feels normal for USB. The whole case looks beautiful. It has a strange black colour case that looks almost brown and beautiful orange stripe of light going half around the case from infront to the back. Also the Seagate logo on the right side of the drive is illuminated with the same orange colour. Just beautiful to look at.

from the specs and design of the drives.. yes the use the casing as a form of dampening and a heatsink of sorts...... both the 500gb i had (sold)... had a warm touch.... never hot.... the 750gb i've got here right now has a more solid design... i think it's got a metal of sorts for most of it's casing.. and also get definitely warm to the touch aftering been in hard labour for quite some time.... none of which have shown any temperature over 40-45*C though.. (case is quite warm to the touch but not hot in any way... and it it were 50*C... it would feel like a burn.... but it doesn't)
USB speeds are right on 30MB/s generally (read or write) i've seen speeds above 32MB/S though. FireWire is pretty decent.... i think i prefer usb over it though. ESata however... now that's what i call speed.... the Drives spit out numbers similare to that of the internal Seagate Barracuda 7200.10's for my drive...... VERY nice results. you can pick up a bracket that fits into one of the slots in your case.... that gives not only 1 or 2 esata ports (that plug into the normal sata ports on the motherboard) but some of them will give you Sata power as well as standard 4 pin molex connectors as well. JUST A FYI, you CANNOT use standard SATA cables to attach the drive/esata connectors.. you must buy the cable designed for it.

I won't be using eSATA for a while, till/if I get a new desktop PC, a month or so from now, but thank you for the cable info.
Did you use some digital thermometre for the temps you mentioned? Program or just good guess? I would love to find a program to check the actual temperature of the drive in there. I am worried that if the temperature of the drive is very good it will fail eventualy, and no, I don't mean 5 years from now :-p I still think it is the most beautiful external HDD solution that I have ever seen.

Well on the drive i had... i used the seagate suggested drives..... I think it only works when using Esata though....
i'll have to go look again though.... does it actually feel like it's going to burn you when you touch it for a very small period of time?

Touching the drive from the front, like a baseball bat or a book while in operation for about 2 hours constantly writing data, it doesn't get to the point that it feels like it will burn your fingers, but that's my fingers I am talking about.
I wish there was a way to check the temps. If esata is needed for that, then I will have to wait. Already copied about 700GBs to it, USB. I tried to run a few video files from it and I have to say the performance is very good. If the drive survives a few years instead of days (*cough* wd mybook *cough*) then I will be happy, heat or not. Plus, have I told you how much beautiful it is? It's my precious! I can't wait to plug in the second one after I finish copying to this one.

yeah that sounds about right for temperatures..
i mean you don't have a towel wrapped around it right? ![]() Yesterday i did a full multi system backup via ESata.... 735gb in one shot.... took about an hour due to some networked machines backing up through one machine.... at the same time.. plus a pile of small files and large ones to. (the large files hit 80+MB/s) I could put my hands around the drive halfway through and while it was definitely warm... it never felt to hot at all
