new mainboard, so many choices..
A little more then a month ago I have send my mainboard for RMA, because my PSU killed it. (PSU send for RMA too)
Now is this particular mainboard at the end of it's life, so I can't get the same one and have to buy another one, although I got credit for the one I send RMA, I only have to pay for the pricedifference. I always have so much trouble picking out a good mainboard, there are so many choices. I was wondering if you guys could help me make a choice. I want a pretty futureproof board, which can do quattro-cores, and is able to do stable overclocks. As far as I know, mobo's that support DDR2 AND DDR3 are pretty rare, and I think the support for both doesn't really help with the stability. Altough it will take several years for DDR3 to take over the place of DDR2, so DDR3 support isn't really needed. When looking at the mainboard roundup in the review section, I think my best bet would be to go with the Asus Striker II Formula. Would you agree, or do you have an even better option? Right now I have still a dual core, but I plan on getting a quadcore for cheap as soon the new intel processors get on the market and everybody tries to get rid of their quadcores..

The ASUS P5Q deluxe looks good to me. I don't think you should worry too much about DDR3 yet because no matter what mainboard you buy now, as far as I know, none supports the next generation of Intel's CPUs that is out soon (I don't know how soon), so if you want to buy a new system now, my guess is you might as well get a DDR2 mainboard and save some money (memory).
Unless you are going the AMD way, but I have no idea what AMD is doing with CPUs other than trying to outflank transmetta or something.

yea. DDR2 is the thing I need.
It's just replacing the mainboard really, not building a new system. I was looking at the P5Q-E too.. which would mean I wouldn't have to add almost any cash for a replacement board. Only question is, what is the difference between the P5Q-Deluxe and the P5Q-E? Is it worth the few pennies in difference and should I just get the deluxe? edit: The main difference as far as I found on the net is that the -E has 8phase power, and the -deluxe has 16phase power.. of that is all, I personally don't think that justifice the 30 euro's in price difference.

ah ok
![]() figured i'd put that out there.. because it's so much nicer building a machine with decent quality parts that aren't to expensive..... the result is a few more dollars in your pocket making it easier to pop in a newer board down the road.

yea.. like I said, I have credit for the board I send for RMA, about 125 euro's.
But I figure the P5Q-E is the best choice. It costs the same, so effectively it would mean I'm exchanging the P5K-deluxe I had for the P5Q-E. Haha, I'm here answering my own questions... I'm just so inable to make decisions when it comes to computer hardware. I like to have the best for so little money as possible, and it always feels as if there is something better out there without me knowing..

only the SE that comes with no Intel ICH RAID.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() new mainboard, so many choices..? what are the rest of your choices then? i mean besides the P5Q-E and P5Q Deluxe. do you like to try Gigabyte or DFI at all ? if i stop using my P5Q Deluxe for whatever reason, i always liked to try DFI P35 but never have a chance, so i plan to have a DFI P45 DDR2 and if possible then Gigabyte P45 DDR3 (EP45T-DS3R) would be next. |

well.. it's like what I said in the first post.
My P5K-Deluxe died, and I've send it for RMA. Now they can't replace that particular board because it is discontinued. I received a credit of 125 euro's which they will pay me, or I can use it to get me a new board. (can't do anything without a motherboard) I just don't know what kind of board to choose. I don't have any experience with gigabyte, MSI or any different brand then Asus. The P5Q-E would come down to 125 euro's which means I don't have to pay anything extra. The store doesn't sell gigabyte or DFI.. In this pricerange they have very few others then Asus, only MSI and Foxconn.. But I guess I will get the P5Q-E. Reviews I read told me it was a good overclocker, it's stable and I think it will suit me fine for the next year, year-and-a-half, till the next generation (new sockets) will come out..
