Need a monitor

Well, folks, I'm in need of a new monitor.

My beloved Sony/SGI FW900 just bit the big one

I'm definately going to get another one, but until I can find one, I'm thinking of this as a tempory replacement:
Newegg.com - Acer X193W+BD Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 2000:1 (ACM) - LCD Monitors

I can pick it up locally for 139.99 after rebate.

It will be my primary monitor, until I find and replacement FW900, at which time it will become my secondary one.

Your thoughts? Customer reviews on the Egg seem decent enough, but then some folks that review there aren't the sharpest spoons in the drawer either. I don't do HEAVY gaming. Mostly IL2 1946 online, and a bit of Halflife2, Halo, and Far Cry offline, and like I said, it will spend most of it's life as the secondary monitor.

It seems ok, but I don't know the quality of Acer monitors.
I would rather get Newegg.com - SAMSUNG 2053BW High-gloss Black 20" 5ms (2ms GTG) Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 DC 8000:1(1000:1) - LCD Monitors
or Newegg.com - LG L226WTQ-BF Black 22" 2ms GTG Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 3000:1 DCR with HDCP Support - LCD Monitors

But for that 139.99 price, I don't see how you could go wrong.

Yeah, those look good, but with my 'somewhat limited' desk area, those would be just a bit too big, to use as a secondary monitor.

Plus when I'm looking at this:
AccurateIT - ** FREE Freight Shipping ** 24" SONY GDM-FW9012 FD Trinitron Flat CRT Monitor oem HP A7217A

Or ideally this, as the SGI seems to be the best of the FW900 series:
AccurateIT - 24" SGI GRAY FD Trinitron Flat CRT GDM-FW9011 Monitor ** FREE Freight Shipping **

Spending @ $100.00 less for the LCD is a consideration too

So you absolutely going for a CRT monitor? I don't know if I would like to buy a $1000 monitor that is refurbished.
You could get a similarly specced TFT monitor for a fraction of the weight. :-p

You have obviously never seen just how good the Sony FW900 is.

There isn't a LCD on the planet that can compare with it for image quality.

Plus you aren't tied in' to a "Native resolution".

You aren't tied to a native resolution with TFT monitors either...

I haven't used the specific model by Sony, but I have used many CRT monitors in the past, including Sony models. I am not saying it isn't good, I am saying that some TFT monitors out now are f*ing awesome. You just need to spend some money on it.

You are not TIED to native resolution with most LCDs, but it is highly recommended to make the best use of a pixel addressable resolution. Sub-pixel rendering (eg. Cleartype) will not work correctly if you are not using native resolution.

No DVI input, just the D-Sub...is this a consideration?

I've seen the sony FW900.

There are plenty of LCD monitors that today, at the price could easily out do that monitor any day of the week.

Don't be so hard on LCDs, if your willing to spend the same amount on a LCD, you'll definitely get a superior screen, and some of your desk realistate back.

don't TOUCH an a hanns G monitor... please for the love of gaud.. you'll likely want to smash it the first 5 seconds you turn it on. Royal hunk of garbage.... i wouldn't even use it as a 4th display.

Stick with the Acer, but considering your only going to spend sub 150 bucks... your not asking for anything but crap to begin with.

I can only say that from my own experience you can't go wrong with a Samsung LCD. I've got a SyncMaster 2032BW myself and I haven't seen anything better than this. The best buy I've ever made. I just wish I could have fitted a 22" on my desk instead of this 20" but when it comes to the quality I haven't seen anything that beats it so far. I do graphics work and I play games and it hasn't let me down, ever.

I completely agree about the 2032BW, it is worth every penny. In my opinion it has a very good quality picture, and very sharp, due to its smaller dot pitch, which was the main reason I bought a 20" monitor. Glad I picked this one. There was no 2053BW at the time I was buying, but as I understand it is the successor of 2032BW, with some improvements.

Update

Gonna hold off on a new monitor.

Looking at AccurateIT's web site I noticed that they also do REPAIRS!

Well, I called them, and it looks like I can get the FW fixed for 'probably' under $200.00

I originally only paid $150.00 for it this FW900, which was the bargin of the century, so not spending another $200.00 or so on it would be foolish.
By doing that, I'll end up with basically this:
AccurateIT - 24" SGI GRAY FD Trinitron Flat CRT GDM-FW9011 Monitor ** FREE Freight Shipping **
