Help with Optical Drive

I have had this computer for a year now and out of nowhere, the optical drive is not working. You can tell that the power is getting to the drive, but i can't tell if my computer is detecting it. From this picture it looks like it detects the cd-rom, but dosent have a drive? Here is a picture of what im looking at.

this is what it said later last night

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

if this is under vista (which by the looks of it, it is), i have no experience, so my best advice would be to look for a compatible driver on the net, on PLEXTOR's site for starters, a vista driver (if indeed the picture at what i'm looknig at is a vista screenshot, i can't tell i'm a xp for now, and a former win2000, win98, win95 user)

I think the first thing I'd try is to go the Control Panel/Device Manager and UNINSTALL the cd/dvd drive. Then re-boot. That would allow the OS to find and re-install the drivers. It may not fix it, but it can't hurt anything either.

If the above don't work. Open the case and make sure than neither of the cables attached to it are loose. Either to the drive or to the mainboard.

also, you want to make sure it's being detected in BIOS as well. if it's not, then open up your case to make sure the power cable and data cable are properly attached.

either windows has messed up.... cable is loose.... or the drive just happened to quit on you...

solutions have been suggested.
