is this better than what i've got?
A friend of mine gave me some hardware that he's not using anymore, but i'm wondering if it's really any better than what i currently have. To me, it doesn't really seem like it is. What are your thoughts? Am I right to think that it's not better?
The stuff in question Gigabyte GA-K8-SLI, Intel based nForce4 SLI Intel p4 630, socket 775 2GB 533Mhz DDR2 RAM 7600GT My current stuff Abit IC7-G (Intel 875 chipset) Intel p4 3.2Ghz Prescott, socket 478 2GB DDR400 RAM x1950pro AGP Aside from the gfx card which is obviously better in my current machine than the 7600GT, my main question is about the CPU/memory/MoBo. |

your friends DDR2 @ 533MHz DIMMs are definitely better, what you habe are DDR1 DIMMs, about the other stuff, whell, i'm shure someone with a little bit more experience than me in mother boards and CPUs will answer you that question...

the s478 system is my current system. see "system specs" for my current standing system in its entirety.

in terms of CPU power that S775 rig looks better than your current but the gfx card is not better ... If I were you I would stay at status quo and save money for c2d system

yea, i know that's the decision i'm trying to come at here ATM.
and with the RAM, although i know it is a faster speed, at 800Mhz FSB, DDR2 will not give me a 1:1 ratio. especially when the primary difference between the 500 series and 600 series P4s is that the 600 series have 64bit support. furthermore, the 500 series P4s are just 775 versions of their 478 counterpart. so, CPU wise, it's really a 200Mhz downgrade. i'm also thinking of taking my youngest sister's machine, and taking that Gigabyte 965 chipset board, her e4400 CPU, and her DDR2 800 and give her these components i was given

now thats an idea, get yerself a 4850 to go wit it and you should be screaming! as long as your PSU is worthy!
i dont think it would be worth the trouble going from one p4 single core to another. |

swap with her if its just sitting there! get the dual core, give it some clocks, and get a PCI express card to your liking, good ones can be had for cheap.

a few hundred dollars to a cheap system will greatly surpass your current system....

, yeah, i know, i used to do that to my sister too, downgrading her rig, hahahaha , she never notices, all she does on her machine is MSN chat, or read mail, or play card games (the default form Windows), hahahaha . momenteraly she has a nVidia TNT 2 Model 64 Pro... hahahahaha .but lets get back to the topic at hand, i think it's better to stick to your old rig, save some money for a new graphic card... or just take it from your sister, hahahahahah

.but, that would require that i buy a new PSU though....which i don't have the money for ![]() ugh, i want to upgrade, and my friend told me, "it's a good machine" but he didn't know any of the system specs as it was the old parts out of his friend's old machine that was taking apart to build him a new machine. i just want to upgrade is all for as cheaply as possible!!! and free is pretty damn cheap! i might just end up selling this stuff instead as it's not really an upgrade of anything i currently have. or, i could have this be for another machine i can build myself for shits and giggles. or, i can make this into ..... idk ![]() i just want to upgrade. i'm ranting more than anything now |

well, i'd be taking this from my 10yr. old sister, not my other sister that used to post here on DH, lol. Quote:
.well, lets just say i do take my 10yr. old sister's machine and go ahead with the swap. that machine has an 8600GT 256MB card in it. How does that card compare to the 7600GT card that i got from my friend? Which of the two cards would be the better performing card? Those are my current video card options... |

swap systems with your sister, keep the 1950 in house, use the 8600, take the freebie and get what youcan out of it, part it out or all in one. get paid to go dual core!
LOL ![]() what the heck you been waiting for to grab up on that dual core? no games callin your name? |

well, the reason why i haven't really considered swapping out my freebie parts with my sister's rig is because although yes it is a better system, it's not really what i want in a new build. and i'm not the kind of person who goes half-ways on something. for me, it's all or nothing. so, swapping components between these freebie parts and my sister's rig is more of a half-way type thing for me.
the components i want at least are: EVGA 780i FTW or EVGA 790i FTW MoBo q9450 4GB DDR2 or 2GB DDR3 (depending on which board i get of course) GTX 260 core 216 i might just keep everything and use it as tester components in the end... |

i would say... just swap everything you got with your sisiters rig, keep the freebie parts as a backup (if something burns ou, or for some kind of a replacemnet, or whatever, maby get a new graphic card in exchange for all the prats), and put your rigs parts in her case... she wount notice a thing, trust me, i mean, she's 10... what could she posibly know about PCs...

maybe your current rig with 1950 is better for a 10 yr old?

it artifacts when under load. i can't run ATI tool for more than 10min. before it starts to artifact. when playing games, Dark Messiah was the last game i played, it was giving yellow dots and minor tears sporadically throughout the screen. When i was playing Prey, the same things happened.

, that way you can have the newer parts from her rig (transfer them again), and give her back the parts you took, it's a sweet deal... hahahaha
