Looking at First Build in 5 Years

I haven't built a PC in over 5 years, so I'm a bit out of touch of what's good and not.
The two main things I'm not sure about are the motherboard and videocard.

I'm going to go with an AMD x2 6000+, and am looking for suggestions on a reliable MB with future upgrades in mind. I'm not into overclocking but SLI may be an option at some point.

I also want to go with nvidia on the graphics card, is there really much difference between the 9600 and 9800 series?

btw, I'll be ordering everything from Newegg.

System Specs

price range is always important..

and AMD + nvidia is all but no more....

currently Nvidia and ATI are almost tied with Nvidia having the superior multi-GPU system and ATi having the best bang for buck. ATI has the best single card and Nvidia has the best single GPU as well as PhysX

AMD is the best bang for buck chip but intel is still alot better overall with superior memory capability. The AMD memory controller cant handle as much memory as intel at 1066+ speeds

If you really want to go with AMD I'd say that's not a good choise if you want to be a bit future proof.

That CPU is a waste of money right now. If you really want AMD and a cheaper CPU then I'd suggest the new Phenom X3 8750 Black Edition and an AM2+ motherboard.

Problem is that AM3 is coming soon, in the first quarter of 2009, and I'd suggest that you wait until then and see what it looks like.

If you really want nvidia with a possible SLI later on I can't give you any suggestion when it comes to motherboard, I'm an ATI fan myself so I have no real idea.

And the 9800 is quite a bit better than the 9600, in more ways than one.. except for the price.

I'm not brand specific, and after some thinking, it's doubtful I will go SLI. The ATI 4850 looks pretty nice, the 4870 is more than I want to spend.
