Pata failure
What can cause the old PATA/IDE port to just fail?
Tonight I noticed I couldn't find any of the partitions of my old IDE harddrive or the IDE DVD burner. They just weren't avaliable. Strangely enough they worked just an hour earlier. A reboot fixed the problem so they work and are useable again but I find it strange that they can just disappear like that. |

where did they dissappear from? if you use XP, there was this prank me and a couple of friends of mine used to do, add a registry key to the registry and nothing from the IDE drives appears in My Computer
, hahahahah.... . people got so confused, they would call me in the middle of the night saying to get right away to their house and fix the problem .anyway, if a simple reboot fixed the problem, my opinion is that it could be one of two things, either the hardware controller failed (glitched) during the firs boot and then fixed itself somehow, or the OS got "confused" somehow and didn't detect them... not a bad idea to check for trojans... hey, don't worry, it's probably nothing, if it's XP running or your rig, then Windows XP can be a pritty tricky OS...

They didn't disappear during a reboot. They were there and I used them and suddenly an hour or so later they weren't.
It's worked flawlessly for 6 months so I doubt it's any conflict, I would have noticed that earlier if so. And no, it can't be a prank since there just isn't anyone else that has access to this computer. Of course I could have been hacked but I do try to keep my firewall as tight as I possibly can so I don't think it's very likely. |

Re: Pata failure
then it's either usually of these 3 things:
1: IDE cable decided to die or quit working right or 2: Power Cable connection loose... not working right or 3: IDE controller or Hardrive onboard IDE controller not working properly or failing

Well, it's been up and running now for 24 hours without problems again so who knows. We'll see if it happens again. In a sense I hope it's the last because I need an excuse to send this motherboard back.... :P |

Re: Pata failure
Sometimes the PSU dipping out will do that

Re: Pata failure
there is no way of knowing what is happening to the drive untill you have tried every possible scennario and eliminated them one by one...

Re: Pata failure
I know. It was just odd. It's worked perfectly ever since.
