switch to firefox... that's the best uneducated answer i could give you...
![]() but, about the task manager, that sounds weird, does it do that only when Internet Exlorer is running, or all the time, cuz if it does it all the time, maby it's some kind of trojan, maby a worm... who knows...

My first impression would be a virus, or at least a piece of malware/trojan. At the very least I would do a scan with a couple different scanners such as SUPERAntiSpyware, and MalwareBytes Anit-Malware. In this case the piece of malware has changed your user policies to not allow certain items to be run. You can try to run THIS utility to re-enable the Task Manager. I would also suggest running a program called FixPolicies (run from normal Windows, not Safe Mode) that will reset your policies back to default.
Edit: as a precaution I would also run a program called SDFix. This is a collection of utilities, along with certain settings that will reset a lot of your security settings, as well as search for specific trojans/malware. You run it from within Safe Mode under the user you normally use. Once you extract it to your C: drive (by default it is C:\SDFix) just run the file called RunThis.bat, and it will do it's thing. Once done the first 1/2 reboot into the same user under normal mode, and it will continue the 2nd half of the cleaning. Last edited by Tipstaff; Oct 3, 2008 at 10:39 PM. |

maby a system restore would help too... not a bad idea to try... after you ran an antivirus check on the PC ofecourse.

task manager being disabled is a dead giveaway of a virus infection of sorts
there area considerable number of programs that are showing up auto downloading to people computer and litterly destroying the machine software side. Super Anti Spyware has a built in "task manager" repair feature....

Re: what the hell is going on my computer?
There was at least one set of CAT drivers that had the white dot, but they didn't disable anything. The cure for that was simple Just set the Catalyst options to NOY show the icon on the taskbar.
However, I'm with Judas. This is someting different. Looks like Spy/malware and/or a virus/trojan.

Re: what the hell is going on my computer?
if Tipstaff's suggestions don't work, i'd consider reinstalling windows using a low-level format.
but that's on the extreme end of things - you know, the last resort to fixing things.

Re: what the hell is going on my computer?
If nothing of the above (the various anti malwares) works, then I can only suggest to restore the system with Ghost, reinstall apps you always use, and then make another Ghost image. It won't help you this time, but you'll be OK if something like this happens again.

Here's something to try: copy what's below into a text file (between the dashes, but not including them), save it, and then rename that text file to have a reg extension (something like enabletaskmgr.reg). After that either double-click it, or right-click and merge it into the registry, then reboot. ----------------- Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\System] "DisableTaskMgr"=dword:00000000 ----------------- If this is blocked, either by the system telling you that this sort of thing has been blocked by the admin or some such nonsense, or it doesn't work, my guess would be that you have a bigger problem such as a piece of malware running in the background. Although I didn't mention it, it's usually wise to disable all your startup items (Start|Run|msconfig|Startup tab) except your anti-virus software, reboot, and do a thorough scan with the malware programs I mentioned. If you seen anything in the list of startup items that you don't know, or basically look like gibberish (zwzlradfy.exe) delete them using a startup control program such as StartupMonitor (not only does this program monitor your startup programs list it allows you to delete ones you don't want). As for protection, there really isn't much you can do. Other than making a dedicated gaming machine pretty much being cautious what you open, where you surf, and what you download, along with having a decent AV software is all you can pretty much do. You can also look for what's called a "roll back" software, such as RollBack RX which is a more expanded system restore software, or a program like Drive Vaccine or DeepFreeze which literally restores the PC back to a specific image every time you reboot the machine. The Drive Vaccine I use on client kiosk machines a lot, or on machines that are used by more than one person. I never EVER have to clean them of rogue software, viruses, or anything harmful as all it takes is for me to restart that machine, or have it setup that whenever a person logs off I'm back to a fast clean OS every time. Re: what the hell is going on my computer?
alot of these recent viruses will emediately retake and reset that task manager being disabled within a matter of seconds of shutting down the program that "fixed" it.... this is a clear indication that the virus is still prevailent in the system.
low lvl format followed by a ghost would be the end all solution

Re: what the hell is going on my computer?
So would taking a sledge hammer to that drive, and buying a new one. Or better yet, do what this one guy I remember always did whenever he got a virus: buy a new computer.
![]() Drive Vaccine or DeepFreeze, along with a some sort of AV software to scan active user data or stored data on a "thawed" (DV) or "freeze" (DF) partition, and having a Ghost image of the system in case of hardware failure is the best setup imo. As I mentioned I use this setup for a lot of my corporate clients machines, and it's never failed me yet. As a matter of fact I use this very setup on my recovery machine at the store. I have it setup this way so that I if I need to backup client data to it I can, and all I have to do is reboot it to keep that machine clean. Even if I've scanned their data for viruses on their computer beforehand I'll scan it again on that machine for viruses cuz I know it's safe to do so. Again, reboot, and I'm clean again. After I'm done reinstalling their machine (via a Ghost image or reinstall) I just dump the data back. Yes, it's not 100% virus fool proof (and I do mention it to the clients), but it's better than the alternative. |

As to the story about the guy that buys new rigs every time he gets a virus, it was posted here on DH a year or so back. I can't find it now, but if I remember correctly a lot of people that responded in that thread left forwarding addresses for the guy.
