DVB-T Dongle and temperature
Just got myself a cheap USB DVB-T Dongle so I can recieve terrestrial digital TV on my computer. I really don't know why, I just thought it would be a fun thing. I was bored and needed something new to play with. :P
Emtec S801 is the name of it. However, I noticed that the CPU core temps increased with about 10 degrees when I have the dongle connected, even if I'm not running the software to watch TV. I find this a bit strange since CoreTemp doesn't show any CPU load. Anyone got an idea why? |

Re: DVB-T Dongle and temperature
Are you on XP SP3 ?
I seem to recall some USB issues which could interfere with reaching some low power states, and I'm guessing the patches are now in SP3.

Re: DVB-T Dongle and temperature
Yes, XP SP3.
So what you're saying is that it's a fix in SP3 that causes this? I just don't understand how the core temps can rise when there is no load on the cpu's. But, I don't know everything so! ![]() It's no big issue since I won't have it connected if I don't need it but still. |

Re: DVB-T Dongle and temperature
could be some kind of a "bug fix"
. SP3 is not the best Service Pack out there... actually, quite a lot of users have complained of "unlogical" and sometimes even harmfull behavior of SP3 on the rig...downgrade to SP2, that's the best advice i can give you...

Re: DVB-T Dongle and temperature
Oh well...
As I said it's no biggie. I'm not gonna use it when I'm doing something else that stresses the hardware anyway, and this is just a temporary setup while I wait for my motherboard RMA so.. it'll work. Just curious as to what causes it. |

Re: DVB-T Dongle and temperature
why don't you ask the "programmers" in Microsoft... what where they thinking when they released SP3... hahahahaha

Re: DVB-T Dongle and temperature
I was hoping it would be a bug fixed in SP3, as there were some patches for SP2 - not even sure if it applies.
Do the temps increase with any USB device connected, a normal pendrive, for instance. Old P-Bug (CPU Load / USB state) - new issuw with Yonah (See TG/slashdot) and MS Bug @ KB899179 - RightMark Forums That's what I was thinking of, the USB prevents the CPU entering deeper C-states for powersaving, the main concern being battery power, but it would presumably raise the idle temprature on any CPU that would normally enter a fairly deep powersave at idle, Battery power may drain more quickly than you expect on a portable computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 - SP3 versions are considerably later than this, so I guess this has been included. Not sure if the registry tweak for EnIdleEndpointSupport in the previous one has any effect now.

Re: DVB-T Dongle and temperature
I just tried with my Sandisc 4GB USB memory and the same thing happened, it just didn't raise temp as much. Never noticed that before, how strange.
Everything else like web camera, printer and joystick doesn't affect this though. However, if it's just a powersaving thing I guess it won't affect the temperatures at high load? |
