EEK! Invisible DVD Drive?????!%^@&!

Hi Everyone, I have a weird problem... I recently bouaght a new computer (2 months ago) quad core 9300 4 gb ram nvidia 9800 geforce gt. The DVD Drive worked fine, until yesterday when I turned on my computer the DVD Drive Didn't appear on the drives list, as though it is not connected. in the DOS screen it says that no Drive is connected (the hard drive works fine). The DVD drive seems ok, i can open and close the tray, but i cant run cds or dvds. Is there something i can do or should i open the case and check its cables?

Re: Invisible DVD Drive?????!%^@&!

if it isn't recognized at post, definitely check the cables. That is really the only thing it could be. Besides a dead drive.

Re: Invisible DVD Drive?????!%^@&!

i agree with Lowfat, check the post screen, if the drive appears as a SATA or a ATA (PATA) drive, the the problem is with the OS, if the drive doesn't appear in the post screen, then the problem is probably with the SATA/ATA cables .

Re: Invisible DVD Drive?????!%^@&!

Same thing has happened to me several times, and in fact, my computer right now has that problem.

I attribute the problem to dead drives, so you probably can too.

Re: Invisible DVD Drive?????!%^@&!

Most DVD drives have a little light that flashes green as the PC power's up are you seeing that ?

If not as suggested it may be your Cable between DVD and pc mobo but TBH if its only 2 months old i would suggest a trip back to the store where you purchased it ... you should still be under a warrenty

Re: Invisible DVD Drive?????!%^@&!

ok
so the problem is in the os.
the driver apperas in the post screen, but not in the os.
must be a driver problem, however everytime i try to install the drivers, it says that i don't have permission from my administrator.
(the dvd drive is -sony optiarc 7200 as-)

run the driver executable as administrator, you do this by rightclicking the program and select "Run as administrator"

If you have Windows XP try this: Restore Missing CD or DVD Drive
It helped me when my dvd drive disappeared.

Cables and power... try replacing the cable. If that doesn't work, swap the drive.

Re: Invisible DVD Drive?????!%^@&!

then, my best bet would be that there is something wrong with the registry entries or the drivers on the OS, have you tried using any other OS besides Vista...?

Re: Invisible DVD Drive?????!%^@&!

A good test would be to try to boot from the DVD drive.
Just put you Vista DVD in and see if you can boot from it.

Make sure the BIOS is set to boot from DVD first.

If this works then the DVD is working.

Re: Invisible DVD Drive?????!%^@&!

here is what i found in some forums after googling around a little bit... thi seems to be an age old problem even in XP... here is what seems to solve the problem.

Quote:
Restore Missing CD/Dvd Drives

follow these directions for clearing the Upper/Lower Filters in Vista: (might want to print this out)

1. Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key ( if Vista Start search or windows+R )

2. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or

3. clicking the "+" next to it.)

4. Expand the "SYSTEM" Key

5. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key

6. Expand the "Control" Key

7. Expand the "Class" Key

8. Please look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

9. High light this key by left clicking once on it

10. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these please delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"

11. Please exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen

Reboot your computer

Re: Invisible DVD Drive?????!%^@&!

It is the same fix I linked in post #9, but I didn't know that it is identical for Vista...

By the way, I needed this yesterday when my DVD drive disappeared after I was trying what Autoruns can do

Re: Invisible DVD Drive?????!%^@&!

This just happened to me yesterday while trying to install a game. Drive doesn't spin up and after going to explorer i see no OD icon. Anyways, the registry fix fixed it.

I noticed one of the filters had a reference to AnyDVD. I installed the latest version a few days prior, could that have mucked something up? or some DRM detecting that app?
