My new graphics card is here!!

Hay DH's finest has finally gotten his Sapphire HD 4850 wait for it wait for it ..........
............. 1GB GDDR 3 , I was so shocked when i received the box and realized it was a 1GB card and not a standard 512MB. As some of you with long memories will remember i was expecting a standard card coz my friend who was getting me the card had a limited budget of 130 pounds (GBP), but lo and behold i got a card that was 30pounds more expensive (160)...

Congratulations, just make sure you
A)Clean it more often, the old one looks like it has risen from the dead.
B)Make sure the temperatures are ok with it, if have to set manual fan settings.

I noticed that, too. But, was on my way out the door and didn't take the time to mention it. Glad you did...and hope he does!

There is probably a thread on this and i've never really looked it up. But how are mini dust blowers on the health of your pc. i'm thinking I should get one. I think cow should get one too.LOL

Congratulations dude !

Don't forget GTA IV as well . hehe

I am using a blower to get rid of the dust on my rig from time to time and it enhances the performance of my computer after dropping a bit from this stuff.

Ya the old one was pretty dusty

Congrats on the card, man..

My friends got the same one a while ago, it rocks.
Its shorter design than refferent, and you'll be satisfied with the cooler too, IMO. It's much more effective than the refferent one.

I've just always used canned compressed air. Just don't get it too close to the fans when blowing the dust off them as you can damage them that way with too much force up close. But, I take my PC outside with the side cover off and blow away.

Just one other thing about this: The worst place for the PC is on the floor. It will gather much more dust faster there than if it's raised onto a table or at least off the floor a foot or two. Dust settles on the floor and the fans will pull it in faster there than anywhere else. It's even worse if the floor is carpeted.

congrats on the new card man! and as previously mentioned, blow it out to keep the dust bunnies away. once a month at least. invest in a small air compressor so you don't have to keep on buying compressed air cans

nice..... but i'm still having a hard time understanding the 1gb onboard memory..... considering that many games still seem to be not taking advantage of it.....

i'm still waiting for unreal devs to drop some 8182x8182 textures into one of thier tech demos

What was the old card, with those front and back heatsinks and dual slot cooling, I would have guessed on it being pretty powerful.

The new one is single slot fitting, but it looks like the cooler still obstructs the second slot, with no exhaust there any more, you might find case temps increase.

I'd be inclined to put a slot plate cooler below it, unless there is a side panel fan delivering fresh air towards it.

Yeah, IMHO, at this time probably the only games that might make some good use of 1GB of memory are Crysis and HL2 with Fakefactory's Cinematic Mod. (Both on resolutions of 1920x1200 and higher.).
But I'd say, in case of this graphics card, I would definitely get the 1GB version if the price is right.

No harm of having some more VRAM just in case.

Looks like a Gigabyte 7600GT. (EDIT: No, it's x1600 or something like that) Case temps will increase for sure.

Great card. I don't think 1GB of video memory is overkill, especially if he plans to keep it for >2 years like the previous card. But at 160 quids it's a bit expensive.

i think this would cool far better mounted on the side of the case

might be a bit loud.. and you'd have to run a seperate 50amp 240v circut.... hopefully the case doesn't get blown apart

actually what i put up there is used for grain bins, they are areation fans, they use high horse power electric motors to force massive amounts of air through thousands of bushels of grain.

the CFM would likely blow the doors of some of the typical industrial fans.

With one of them running in a bin, if you were to stand in the bin, your ears would plug/pop from the shear preasure.

if one were to mount something like that, you wouldn't need a cpu fan or any fans for the matter, there would be so much air forced into the case, if it didn't break anything like blow the ram/video card or thier heatsinks off, it couldn't possibly keep it any cooler on air.
