Raptor X upgrade to Velicoraptor.... worth it?
Well this will be my first upgrade as im probably swapping out my old 250gb hard drives for a pair of 500gb drives or so soon. I am also considering getting rid of the raptor 150 as its kinda getting thin on space, and its loud as hell. People tell me there is a noticeable speed benefit with a raptor, but with SATA 150 I really don't know if its any faster than a SATAII 7200rpm with 32mb cache. The velicoraptor looks cool, the reviews are ok. Is it worth it? If it can shave a few minutes off WoW installs, I am game ahaha.

No it won't shave minutes of WoW installs, i doubt it would even shave any noticeable seconds.
The drives from my own tests, don't show any considerable advantage of even some of the 7200rpm drives i've been using. Save your money, your better off with 2x 7200.11 seagate 500gb in raid 0 for the price of the one velicoraptor. btw, benchmarks still show the 7200.11 is still outperforming in raid 0 arrays.

Re: Raptor X upgrade to Velicoraptor.... worth it?
if you want a worthwhile upgrade.... get a seagate Cheeta 15.6k drive...... nothing can touch it, the bus interface is the only thing slowing it down, course it's a waud of cash...
A single 7200.11 isn't all that much slower then a velicoraptor.

Re: Raptor X upgrade to Velicoraptor.... worth it?
then what are these 10k rpm drives useful for besides being put in Raid 0 configurations and reliability?

latencies...... thats just about it..
helps keep the lag down in games... but then again, an Intel SSD would outclass any drive on the market

Re: Raptor X upgrade to Velicoraptor.... worth it?
10,000 rpm drives allow for faster seeks, and the possibility of reading data faster as it passes by the head much much faster.
However the data density is more sparse then that of the seagate drives with 500gb.... so essentially the amount of data passing by on the 10k drive is similare to that of the 7200rpm drive in the same length of time. But then again, all my 7200.11 drives show random seek times of sub 8ms with 6.9ms being the best, and yes the 10k drives can beat that.. but it's marginal at best. That's pretty much the only main advantage it has. Everything is mostly a disatvantage considering you get less space to work with and the costs are considerably higher. 2 7200.11's have beat out 2 velicoraptors..... but it's flip flopping with very little different between who is king in what realms. Your best purchase is ram anyways if your worries about game loading anyways, as both hardrives aren't going to make any noticeable impact without going to the extremes. Extremes being 6 or more Seagate 7200.11's in raid 0 pushing 800-1100MB/s sustained read and writes.
