VPU recovery

Whenever I play left 4 dead, about 20 minutes in. I get a 5 second freeze than a VPU recovery error. I tested it on fallout 3 and i also get the error, but the timing is more random.

I originally thought it was a PSU problem so I upgraded to a corsair 650tx, same issue.

amd phenom 9850
biostar ta790gx a2+
powercolor HD4850 (42C idle, around 70C at load)

Re: VPU recovery

Have you tried 8.11?

If you use 8.10, 8.11, 8.12, use the manual setting for fan and put the fan at 90% (yes it will be loud). The play the games, do you still get the error?

Re: VPU recovery

Tried it, same thing. Sometimes I can play for a while. Its pretty random. Do you think it would be a good idea to run memtest86+(iso cd-bootable)? I think it might be the ram

Re: VPU recovery

I get VPU recovery errors or crashes when playing Far Cry 2, GTA IV and Crysis, all on high settings at 1920 res. The problem for me was overheating VRM's. The temps according to GPU-Z log showed my VRM temps hitting 155C plus before I'd get the VPU error or sometimes the screen would go all multi-coloured and then blue screen.

Re: VPU recovery

The errors can be caused by aggressive RAM timings amongst other things, nVidia cards suffer more but occasionally you do get the problem on ATi like here.

Try raising your memory timings 1 step (i.e. 4-4-4 to 5-5-5) and see if you still have the issue. IF your RAM is overclocked, remove the OC on your RAM to test. Finally, try stepping RAM down 1 speed grade (i.e. DDR2-800 to DDR2-667) and test again.

Re: VPU recovery

Vista or XP?

There is an on going discussion about this in the Vista Radeon forum.

Re: VPU recovery

This is XP. Buffalo select RAM stock clocked. Btw I did memtest86 and it found no errors, but i did not try the "prolonged" cycle tests 8-9? I have some new Ram coming anyway.
