Building a new PC.

I'm not as Computer Savvy as most people are on these forums, but I know enough. I have been raping websites for the last week searching for the components for my first build and I pretty much have them hammered out into what I want... my uses/budget and the items I have selected will be listed below, basically what I'm looking for from people is what they have heard about these hardware pieces (and the OS.).

Basically my priorities for this computer are as follows in order of importance,
1)Gaming (Not on super-high detail
2)Internet Browser
3) Music, IM, basic teenager things
My Budget is $1,100.00 Total. Including Rebates.

I have found the following items that I think would good for my needs, if you notice an problems, just reply and let me know, or if you have heard something about a specific part let me know, anything will help.

Re: Building a new PC.

Well aside from not hearing of some of the manufacturers of the above items, the only thing I would point out is your getting a 32 bit OS. I would definitely recommend a 64 bit OS.

Firstly, the 32bit will have a memory limitation and youll only see about ~3.5g of your ram in the OS. Second, theres really no reason to go with a 32bit OS anymore.

-- edit, looks like you changed the link to the 64bit version :P

Re: Building a new PC.

Also, looking at that PSU.. I honestly wouldn't trust it. The company website is fairly dinky, its non PFC, and the spec list out isn't stellar.

This may be something you could afford :

Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply - Power Supplies

After all rebates itd be 79.99 and is free shipping, it's also 80 plus rated, and corsair PSUs are solid.

You really want to make sure the PSU you get is good quality, if it goes, and fries the rest of your gear...

Re: Building a new PC.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the help and suggestions. I already had my PSU from my old (This one) computer and just figured that it would be good enough for my new one because it was 600w. I didn't really think about it until you said something but now that you brought it up, I mine as well get a new PSU as well as everything else, and I also realize now, instead of getting two good cards, It would make more sense to just get one really good card for a lesser amount of money.

I actually looked at that topic, and based my research off of that. But my research sort of snowballed out of control and ended up covering up most of the components in that list =p lol.

I was originally going to get 32-bit Vista but then changed my mind like 20 mins before I started this topic, so I forgot I changed the link for the OS in my favorites from 32-bit, to 64-bit.

I actually had one more question, but it seems to be an important one. Everyone is talking about overclocking... what is that? I don't need anything specific, I was just wondering what all the hype was about.

Unfortunately I have to wait about 1-2 months until I have enough money to even buy all of the components for my new Computer. I'm only 16 and my job only pays about $100-120/week. I already have $230, the hardest part is not finding all the parts, or putting it together, or even working for the money, the hardest part for me will be the wait.(I'm not very patient when it comes to things like this, lol.)

Thanks again for all the help, and I decided to get a new PSU and to go with only 1 GFX card just a little better one.

Re: Building a new PC.

Sounds like a good plan, and you sound like I did when I was 16 saving up with my job haha.

Overclocking is simply raising the processing power of some equipment (mainly RAM, VC, CPU) by adding voltage, multipliers, etc. This usually improves performance. Some people get really into overclocking and getting the bleeding edge speeds and whatnot, others not so much.

For your purposes and budget and everything with stock cooling, I wouldn't really recommend it. But if your interested in learning more, do some google searches, definitely search the forums here (theres a whole section for it).

In any event, let us know if you need anything else or have other questions
