P5K Deluxe power supply question.

I have a question i need an answer to...My current Mobo is a Asus P5K Deluxe/Wifi edition board.

I have just bought a 700w PSU SLI/Crossfire ready to power up my 4870 that requires a double 6 pin pci-e to power up.As my last psu was a little under powered.

Now back to the board itself..

If you look at the image above where the cpu power cable plugs in (Arrowed)..Previously i only needed the single input from the old psu.

Seeing as the New PSU has a double 4 pin connecter.I am currently using the single connection and would just simply like to know if i should leave it this way or plug in the second cpu power lead in..

I just dont want to cause any damage by plugging it in too quick.Or does it depend on what CPU is installed.

Re: P5K Deluxe power supply question.

I owned that board too a little while back, and if I remember correctly I had to put both the connectors in there. Anyway, my whole computer didn't work back then and I wasn't sure what caused it. I brought my pc to the store so they could look at it, and I got it back with both the connectors plugged in, so I guess they know what they're doing..

Re: P5K Deluxe power supply question.

This P5E3 Deluxe had the same cap it's for PSU's that only have a 4 pin CPU power connector. I removed the cap and used the 8 pin connector on this NZXT PP-800 and would suggest you use all 8 pins as well

Re: P5K Deluxe power supply question.

It doesn't really matter if you're using 4 or 8 pins, but on a board with an 8 pin CPU Power connector you should ideally connect the extra 4 pins so you can get full power to the CPU

It is possible in some PSU's that the rails between the 2 sets of 12V power lines are split using all 8 pins insures you are using the full capacity of these rails.

Isn't that pretty much what i said just in technical terms?
My mate used to have problems overvolting his E6600 because he didn't have 8 pins connected to his board, it wouldn't let him touch the voltages.
Maybe it's like on the 4870 x2 and that sort of card? Can't touch voltage unless there's enough power to it?

Re: P5K Deluxe power supply question.

After reading whats been said above,i went ahead and tried the double connection as i asked.

It took at least ten mins or so to get the correct line up..The lead has three different points with only two of them can be used at one time.Let alone being in a difficult place when i have reasonable large hands.

Offtopic:

Just for your responce,I always leave a + rep where possible for replying.

Mac & Mousey has had some left.

Kris23 & Neshi the system has not allowed me to leave some at this time..But i will asap.

Kinda sorta lol. It does matter whether you have a 4 or 8 pin connection and this is for the PSU not the motherboard. If you look closely at the mobo all 4 12V pins should feed the same trace on the mobo and ditto on the grounds.

Glad you mentioned cards with 2 PCI-E power connectors and it follows a similar concept. If your PSU has 2 seperate PCI-E power rails as my PP-800 does they are both rated at 22 Amps. If you connect the two connectors on just one rail(harness) your card has 22Amps on tap taking into consideration efficiency. On the other hand if you connect one connector from each power rail(harness) as I have on my 4870 you have 44 Amps on tap because you are cascading the power supply rails. Works the same way if your CPU power plug uses 2 independant rails of 4 pins each.

No problem Mac....Just for the heads up i was 70% sure adding the othe 4 pin to the mobo was ok.I just needed a little confirmation.
