Will AM3 processor run with DDR2 ram
Last week my PC turned off, would only turn on for a second and then blue smoke blew out the PSU. So I went and replaced the PSU with a 950 watt Roswell and it does the same thing.
I figured it has to be either the otherboard or the processor right? On my mobo's site it says "AM3 CPU Ready". Does that mean it's DDR2 compliable? If not having that on their page is wack. GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - BIOS - GA-MA790FX-DS5 (rev. 1.0) Well if this is true I can just buy the AM# CPU now and pray it's not a fried Mobo. That way I don't have to upgrade to a new AM# mobo and DD3 ram all at once. Plus I can afford a really nice AMD AM3 processor till I save up to get the other parts. I built this machine from scratch BTW. Thanks. Shamrock

Re: Will AM3 processor run with DDR2 ram
under the gigabyte board image... a big red logo says "AM3 READY"
if the board supports DDR2... and it works with AM3 cpus.... looks like it'll be fine.. but if i recall right, all the features that make AM3 beneficial will be unavailable in that board.

Re: Will AM3 processor run with DDR2 ram
That motherboard can run the new Phenom 2 CPU's, which in turn support both DDR2 and DDR3.
But I can't imagine a bad CPU doing that to any power supply. Even the motherboard shouldn't but I can't rule that possibility out completely. I'd expect the Rosewill 950W to have shortage protection but perhaps it was just a bad unit. You might want to disassemble the system and look for component damage before plugging in anything else. |

Re: Will AM3 processor run with DDR2 ram
Double check all the plugins and make sure they are on right. I was in a hurry putting a machine together once and inadvertently didn't notice that I was one pin off in plugging in the CPU fan to the motherboard (yeah don't ask me how I managed that one) any way, ended up blowing out the PSU and the MB all in one quick second. Thing shorted out, melted the cables on the PSU together. Yeah that was a bright one. :P
Point is, take your time putting the new one in double check to make sure everything is seated and plugged in correctly. As far as the new Phenom's go, they have both a DDR2 and DDR3 memory controller on the CPU so you can use both boards. |

Re: Will AM3 processor run with DDR2 ram
I just remembered the day I overclock my AMD dual core AM2 from 3.2ghz to 3.4...do I buy a mobo first or the processor and try it out in my current mobo? I don't want to buy the processor, pop it in, and fry it too and back to square one.
I took extra good care building this machine the first time and it booted first try and ran for a good few years with my Thermaltake 700 watt. When this machone went last week, I was just watching movies streaming to my Xbox 360 from my PC. When I went to boot the machine would light up for about 2 seconds and then turnoff. Never to a boot screen. After 3 tries with this I held down the power button and it started to boot fine, till bue-ishsmoke blew out of the back of my PSU. I could see the fans light up and monitor turn on soo I figured it was just a bad PSU. I went and bought a NEW 950 wall Rosewell PSU and installed that. I was sure that was the problem. As I unplugged power supply cables from my old psu I put a blue mark where my old PSU was plugged in to make sure I didn't miss anything. Double, triple checked everything from my 1200 watt apc protector and did a really clean install. SO I am guessing it is either the MOBO or PSU mow. I took my old ASMD processor out yesterday and there were mo burn marks. The new PSU is doing the same thing as the old one. Power on for a split second and turn off. I am guessing I have a 50/50 chance this being aan issue with either my Mobo or Processor. I am afraid if I buy I new processor it may blow that one too.

Re: Will AM3 processor run with DDR2 ram
I took everything out of my PC except the processor, PSU, mobo and it still won't start. And this is a brand new processor.
To be safe I am just going to wait for my refund and buy all 3 of them plus AM3 DDR. It's like super cheap now. I can get top end everything for less that $600. And if I find out my new PSU arrived DOA I am going to light things on fire.

Re: Will AM3 processor run with DDR2 ram
My theory is that your PSU when it shorted out could have taken the board with it. I can't be 100% sure but by the sound of things that is my opinion. I was lucky when my PSU fried in my old rig because it only killed itself and nothing else.
