Crash on exit
Hey guys having a little trouble with my main rig, lemme give you a little summary before i post my rig details. I'm running a 6000+ dual core@ 3.0ghz msi plat 9A , dual booting ubuntu and win xp 64.
what happens is on shutdown and only on shutdown i get a "bsod" with a processor.sys error, thats from windows it happened again yesterday while i command lined shutdown in ubuntu Now I'm thinking that when the PC is shutting down and the processor is writing to cache and preparing onshutdown state files or whatever, there is a write error, it hangs and kaput. Now i've seen something similar happen in my old rig, where caching was no longer possible and i'd get 11beeps , i laid her to rest then and there. i need a second opinion thanks in advance DawdXdenta

Re: Crash on exit
That's odd so it happens shutting down with both OS's hmmmm.
I know Windows tends to write a lot as the system is shutting down especially Vista but not sure on Ubuntu.

Re: Crash on exit
games are a bit of a problem because many game features arent supported, but its getting there.
The GFX card manufacturers drivers aren't that good either, since they are made inhouse and are not freeware(cant be free modded for compatibility and performance) Linux right now is good for everything except gaming. I figured out that its my board BTW, the cache modules located around the processor must be getting F******. I've only had it for about a year +2months my last rig lasted 3years and it was an Asrock mobo, more like asSuck. Their stuff isnt all that stable. My board is an MSI, i'm gonna give them hell.

Re: Crash on exit
if you're getting a processor.sys error upon shutdown, have you thought about trying a different processor?
i mean, i know you said you already figured it out, but how sure are you in that? what did you do to find out it was the MoBo and not anything else? |

Re: Crash on exit
lol, i forgot to place the reason as to why i said that.
the reasoning behind trying out a different CPU if possible is because AMD processors have a built in memory controller (if you didn't know, i'm letting yuou know. if you did know, i'm just reminding you of that). so, perhaps during the shutdown process, something is going on in the memory controller that is not working as it should which is causing what you are experiencing. hence, the reason to try a different processor. |

Re: Crash on exit
yep. this has been true of AMD processors since the Athlon 64 s754 CPUs.
and now this is also true of intel processors sicne the release of the i7 |
