Hard drive question...
I presently have a couple of Raptors in raid, which my OS is on. Would I notice a significant drop in performance if I were to purchase a couple of difference drives for my OS? I'm just tired of the noise these damn things make.

Re: Hard drive question...
IMO...
depending on the drives.. lets say you were to get the seagate 7200.11's or 12's ...... they could potentially outperform those raptors...

Re: Hard drive question...
Well, after the numerous complaints about the Seagate drives failing, I won't use a Seagate drive for anything less than a paperweight.

Re: Hard drive question...
Have you thought about getting some sort of noise isolation bay/box to put the drives into instead? If the drives work, this would be a good alternative. You don't need anything expensive, most costing $30 like the Aerocool Aluminum ones, but the only thing is that most are 5.25" boxes, so you will need available bays for these things.

Re: Hard drive question...
I have had good luck with this WD 640G (Black) ... quiet and fast.

@ OP: as previously suggested, go for the WD 640GB drives. here are 3 different drives from WD with 640GB capacity. and the one with the 32MB buffer is only $10 more than the one with the 16MB buffer. i'd say, go for the 32MB buffer one

Re: Hard drive question...
In my case, my Antec P180 pretty much shuts out all noise from within, so I can't hear my Raptors at all. I just see the result of how fast they are when all my crap just loads up so damn fast.
@ scurvy: Samsung drives, while nicely priced, ones like what you have being fast, and have a nice warranty to go with them, can't make up for their biggest fault: a high failure rate. So for that, they suck. Sorry, but they really do. I've never had 1 single Samsung drive last more than a year. Ever. I've sold them in external cases, drop in cradles, inside laptops and desktops, and every one of them have died within a year. I'll buy them for people if they ask for them (and warn them too), but I stopped selling them as standard parts for PCs that I build. I just can't trust them, and since they are part of the warrantied unit there's no way I'm getting stuck with replacing them on my dime. Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick with Seagate for my primary drives (I mostly sell their 7200.11 500GB drives), WD primarly for the larger drives (but not the WD Green series though.. those are pure sh!t), and Hitachi for the cheap people (although WD and Hitachis drives are close in price). I have to say, though, Hitachi has been a big surprise the last couple years. They may not win any speed awards, but so far not one has been returned, and I can't say the same for the Seagate or WD (and obviously Samsung) drives I've sold in that same time period.

Re: Hard drive question...
i've only had 1 seagate drive fail on me.... being a 7200.10 320gb......
all the 7200.11's are 500gb.... no issues with any of them....

![]() Btw, I also use a 750 GB spinpoint and I can't see any noticeable performance difference between them (games etc). |

Re: Hard drive question...
I wont trust a drive as far as i can throw it, but i wouldn't throw it(snicker snicker). I keep all my important stuff backed up. Ripped movies and mp3s can be re-ripped and besides we have a hoarder among us where we live, we call him "The Server", another is "20 terabyte drive" yes that's you charm_quark
