Monitor issue
Having a strange monitor issue which just started right after I built my new system (convenient, right?) and was wondering if anybody has suggestions or has experienced something like this before.
Monitor: Viewsonic VX2235WM If my computer has been off for a prolonged period of time (not sure exact amount as I haven't tested that, but 8 hours is the usual amount it has been off) the monitor will display "No signal" when trying to turn it on and nothing but a black screen will display. However, if I load up into Windows (Vista Ultimate) and let it sit for about 5 minutes my monitor will suddenly display the picture. At this point I can restart or even turn my computer off for a few minutes then back on and I won't experience this problem as it will go straight into a display. I'm not thinking my video card is the problem (Radeon 4870) because I hooked it up via HDMI to my plasma and it never experienced any problems. When my monitor actually displays nothing is wrong with it and it functions 100% as normal, it's only the initial startup that has the problems. Any suggestions on this? |

Re: Monitor issue
Is the monitor new too? Also, do you see the bios flash and/or text messages during bootup?
If you do a restart (not a shutdown and restart...), can you access the bios? Make sure you have the PciExpressGraphics (PEG) set as the initial or default video setting in there. Sounds like your monitor is not seeing or triggering on the "video" sync signal at startup.

Re: Monitor issue
Only two things it could be:
1) The cables between the monitor and the video card 2) The monitor itself The reason I say this is because if your plasma display you have connected to the same video card doesn't have this issue then a process of elimination.

Re: Monitor issue
Monitor is two years old. Nope no bios or text. Just straight up black screen until it sits in Windows for a few minutes. The fact that it randomly started doing this when I used my new computer on it is what drew my concern. I figured that it wasn't my video card as it works perfectly on a different display but it's still odd it hasn't given me any problems until just now. Wondering if somehow or another my computer could be related in causing this problem.

Re: Monitor issue
One way to be sure is try that monitor on another system and see if it acts the same way. It's the delay before it starts operating that has me concerned the problem is internal to the monitor itself.

Re: Monitor issue
if u have to wait 5 minutes, chances are it's the monitor. Something inside has gone "dry" so to speak and needs to be heated up to function. capacitor or the board. either way if you are under warranty then change it
