Power Supply...is it enough?

My 3rd GTX285 will arrive today and I'm rather curious as to whether my 1000w psu will be sufficient to push everything in my system. I used the eXtreme Power Supply Calculator but how accurate is it?

you should be more concerned about your 12v rail of all things....

does your psu have 6 pci-ex connectors?

Re: Power Supply...is it enough?

The bigger question is who made your PSU? Not all PSU's are created equal. There are times when a high quality 750W PSU is better than a POS 1000w one.

My PSU has 4 pci-ex connectors and...FUCK...I just realized I only have (2) molex connectors which means I'm (2) short in order to use molex to 6-pin adapters. The part that REALLY sucks about this is the fact that I can't return the card to Newegg and replacing this PSU would be a major pain in the ass, having to remove the mobo and everything in the case.

***EDIT***

I contacted Newegg and they will refund my money on the video card as long as the seal isn't broken. So, that's a relief...but also a disappointment. I really wanted a 3-way SLI.

Re: Power Supply...is it enough?

I think some kind of divine intervention just saved you a couple of bucks. The performance gains from SLIing is in my opinion not really worth the price.

From what others have said, 3-way SLI isn't beneficial so I really wouldn't notice the difference anyway considering I'm on a 24" lcd and I can't even reap the full benefits of the SLI setup I presently have. I'll just put another $300 with the $400 that's refunded and upgrade my cpu to the QX9770. I'd probably notice more of a performance increase with that instead of a 3rd gpu anyway.

Exactly but would have been neat for you to try out. Glad you caught that and saved yourself some money Bro

dude.... dont waste your money on the QX9770.... just buy an EVGA X58 mobo and i7 920...

both add up to less than your CPU and will easily outperform it

EDIT: woops.... didnt realize you have a dell.... but i think you can just pull all your stuff out of the Dell into a new case with motherboard.... still cheaper than trying to work with that thing....

Actually, Dell has done something right, believe it or not. The XPS 730 is an ATX whereas the 700,710,720 were BTX. Not only did they not cripple the consumer with the case design, but they also left the bios unlocked for any tweaking you might want to do. That being said, I could swap the X58 chipset and cpu with no problems. And, yes, I have considered going that route.

I like THIS mobo, supporting 12gb of DDR3-2000:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131365

Core i7 cpu:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...=920%20Nehalem

Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 (12GB):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145224

Total cost shipped: $1250

I think I'll wait 2-3 months and purchase that combo.

If you want some reading about the x58 motherboards:

Also, I could live with just 6GB of RAM...
