Can a AMD AM3 Phenom II X3 720 with 1666 work?

Building another system this time going AM3. The triple core AMD Phenom II X3 720 that everyone is thinking about. My last mobo I had a ddr2 ram but it couldn't clock past 800mhz unless I had a quad core processor. So I was wondering can I reach 1666 mhz with a triple core procesor?

Also why is all this DDR3 ram selling in 3 sticks instead of 4. I thought you could only run ram in pairs of 2.

Thanks,
Shammy

Hi. Current Phenom IIs officially only support DDR3 1333MHz so, in order to get your memory to run at 1666, you'd have to overclock the FSB from 200 to 250MHz. In a recent review here on DH, while testing the new X4 810, Stu managed to get the CPU to work with the 263MHz FSB frequency so I guess what you want would be possible, but I'm not sure if every board could take it.

As for the DDR3 starting to come in three stick kits, those are meant for the new Intel's Core i7 systems as their new CPUs support triple channel memory access.

Re: Can a AMD AM3 Phenom II X3 720 with 1666 work?

OK that makes sence. So i can just save some money and get 8gb DDR3 in 4 GB sticks.

But will a triple core AM3 processor I want (It's a black edition so it's easily oced from 2.8 to 3.2 ghz easy,)

I mean the triple cores are actually faster than the quads right now. I can always upgrade to a decent quad AM3 processor in the future but since my PC got toasted by my PSU frying the mobo in what I can call "the blue smoke of death innodent of 2009. I am jonesing for my gaming rig to be finished.

I've had DDR3 up to 1740Mhz on a 720 Black Edition, 255HT. 8-8-8 timings too, OCZ Reaper 6-6-6 1333MHz RAM

Board was the M4A78-E
