DVD-burner on older desktop not working-please advise!

I have a desktop Dell 8200 pentium 4 , windows XP home, 1.80ghz 512ram 100gb hard drive that cam with a dvd-rom. I know its old, but I live where only dial-up is available and so this works for me. I use DVDfabdecrypter and nero 7 on my laptop, so decided to put a NEC nd-2500 burner in the desktop for copying discs. wont recognize a disc in the drive, the device manager shows it installed and working properly, I flashed with the latest Original NECdriver(1.0B), and Nero Info shows the drive and the speeds it should be capable of. Is this machine too old/slow to do this? I want to burn at 4x MAX for best quality. It has a faster processor than my laptop. Do I need additional software-I thought Nero has a dvd decoder built in. I can buy a new burner is necessary, but read that the old NEC are better than the new Sony/Nec optiarc.Any advice would be appreciated.

so the drive shows no indication that any kind of disc is present in the drive (not just for empty ones)... did i understand this correctly...?

if so, did you try to see if the drive works in any other PC, or did you tested it only on this rig...?
