Intel Q9550 overclocking advice needed...

Well, I seem to be having a problem, or maybe it's normal. Why is it that everytime I set my voltage and clocks, everything works just fine until I reboot my pc and then it defaults back to the factory settings? This is rather irritating. I've saved the settings in the CMOS but when I reboot or turn the power on after the PC being off, everything reverts back to what it was before I increased the clocks and voltages. Any clues as to why this is happening or how to prevent it would be appreciated.

I'm not sure of what you're asking. The stock speed is 2.83ghz @ 1333mhz FSB. I have increased the FSB to 1507, which bumps the voltage to 1.30v and bumps the speed to 3.2ghz. It runs just fine, with no problems. It just won't retain the settings when I reboot.

Sound like either a bios bug, or a feature that you're using unintentionally (easy mistake to make).

The (potential) fixes are to get the latest bios and check that you understand all the bios settings respectivley.

Having said this, I notice that your rig is a Dell. It wouldn't be out of character for them to have set the PC to do this so that there's an incentive to buy a more expensive processor.

Re: Intel Q9550 overclocking advice needed...

Well, the bios on the 730 series was left unlocked, which means Dell didn't tamper with it. I have the latest bios for my chipset which is 1.0.5. I don't need to overclock, I was just wanting to bump the speed up a little. Hell, my QX6700 was running at 3.2ghz @ 1066fsb and this damn thing is only running at 2.83 @ 1333fsb.

Same motherboard for both CPU's ?

Almost sounds like the CMOS battery is dead ... but if it held settings with the other CPU that doesn't make sense.

Nah, it was a different chipset. The QX6700 was on the 590i. And, scratch what I said earlier about it running just fine at 3.2ghz. I was playing World at War and it froze on me. So, yeah, back to the fuckin' drawing board.

oc these chips has a lot more to do with other voltages beside the main cpu vcore, are there any other voltage options in the bios?

Yep and all manufacturers and chipsets are different and use different terminology ... there should be some industry standard invoked.

OK so a different chipset and other adjustments can be made as [hobo]eclipse mentioned but still doesn't explain the settings being set to default. Normally if the BIOS detects an unstable O/C it will do so right after you make the changes and secondly its gonna beep at you and give you shit ...

if the bios battery was bad and not holding hw settings, would the time and date in windows reflect the bios reset time/date?

Depends on the motherboard and chipset. A buddy of mine did an editorial on this a while back for TechARP and some mobo's retain certain things as long as the PSU is plugged in whether the CMOS battery is dead or not. (System power can be off)

EDIT: Here is the link for lil Franks editorial if your interested
