Win7 - 5 mins cold boot Freezing..
Hi,
Only just recently I've been experiencing this problem. Looking back in the event viewer within Windows 7 shows that I installed a new set of Pax drivers on that day, but i'm not sure whether it's related to the issue. If I am to boot into Windows 7, normally, whether or not i log in, if I leave it or continue using the computer for around five minutes the mouse freezes and the computer completely locks up. No bsod, no errors, just a complete lockup. Mouse and clock are stationary. However, If I boot into Safe mode, the problem doesn't exist. Heres the odd thing.. It only happens when I Cold boot.. Lets say I leave my computer off overnight and then boot it up. When the mouse freezes I've left it for an hour and it was still frozen so I reset, using the reset button on the case. Windows then stays crash free until I cold boot again. Odd eh. Again, I'll emphasise that this doesn't happen in Safe mode. I have cold booted into safe mode to test this. It surpasses the 5 minute anticipated wait. Then I just reboot into Windows as usual. This is the only way I can get my computer not to lock up. Ok so I decided it may of been a driver issue. I've only just last night formatted the entire drive and put a clean installation of Windows 7 on my computer. The latest build. This time I installed the x64 bit version opposed to the x86 (32 bit) version I was using before - mostly to take benefit of my 4gig Ram. About 10 mins ago I cold booted, hoping windows wouldnt freeze again. I came back after pouring myself a cuppa to find the login screen on the screen, but the mouse locked up. New installation of windows = same problem. Now this is only just a recent issue, as of 8th march. I had looked back into the event viewer on my recent windows 7 installation. That day I had installed Youpax Windows 7 6.45 drivers, which can be found over at the Audio forums. Mmm.. Could this be related? Stupidly, Following the installation the new build of windows 7 was the same audio drivers. The Youpax drivers. But this time I installed them via the device manager. Manually choosing the driver, rather than using the Setup.exe. Before I remove the drivers I would like to know if the the installation of sound drivers could cause such thing to happen, especially as it's only on a cold boot. I've been questioning if it was an audio issue wouldnt the problem reappear again next time I boot. So 5 mins into a cold boot = lockup. 5 mins into safe mode = perfectly fine. I would love to hear others suggestions. Thanks alot for any help. |

Re: Win7 - 5 mins cold boot Freezing..
I'm willing to bet it's related to a driver issue. Booting into safe mode with no lock ups and everything running fine is a good indication there is some sort of driver related issue going on.
I would uninstall the driver you think may be causing the issue and see what happens. Also, a number of drivers can cause this kind of behavior as well. Try removing the sound driver in safe mode and boot in to windows normally and see if you are still having the same issue. |

Re: Win7 - 5 mins cold boot Freezing..
I agree about the driver, bring this up with Robert, he would probably want to know about this. I did want to mention though, there is a difference at hardware level between a "reset" from the switch or a restart from the OS and a cold boot or turn off and wait before powering up again..... but this normally doesn't cause any problems unless there is something odd with the software/drivers or a bad piece of hardware.
Yours doesn't sound like hardware and didn't start until the PAX install so theres a catch there. It may be a win7 deal too...... I'm seeing stories about weird things happening that are often sound related with this OS. I personally couldn't get it to work with KX drivers, and the MS drivers for creative/win7 would BSOD my system...... so there's problems with the OS too, in my opinion they have some work to do on win7.

Re: Win7 - 5 mins cold boot Freezing..
I just used the VISTA 64 bit drivers for my X-FI in Win 7 and they work just fine.

Re: Win7 - 5 mins cold boot Freezing..
Go into safemode on your 7 install.
Then open up the control panel, and goto Performance Information and Tools, then to Advanced tools (on the left bar), and view performance details. Take a look in that window and see if its actually recording and boot degradation or freezes, and see what is causing it. |

Re: Win7 - 5 mins cold boot Freezing..
Hi guys,
Thanks for the input, I actually left the drivers as they were and instead of removing them I opened up my case and checked all wires for any loose connections. I pulled all molex extended cables out and plugged them back in together. I then sat back with my fingers crossed waiting for the mouse to freeze on boot - but it didn't! So the answer to my question must have been something to do with my wires in the case being loose or something along those lines and not a driver issue. Thanks again for the suggestions. |
