Re: Q6600-q8200

The Q6600 (Kentsfield) is a 65nm 2.4ghz(266mhz FSB x 9Multi) Quad Core and the Q8200 (Yorkfield) is a 45nm 2.33ghz (333mhz FSB x 7Multi) Quad Core.

It should be noted that 45nm chips are 10% faster clock for clock than their 65nm counterparts. (due to differences in instruction set and L2 Cache)

The Q8200 is faster despite having a lower frequency and half the L2 Cache of the Q6600. Overall the Q8200 will be faster too if you dont overclock, due to it using a 333mhz FSB opposed to 266mhz (In ley terms everything will run faster as opposed to just the processor, besides 70mhz makes little difference.

Just a little info, if you want something explained in greater detail just let me know.

EDIT: I would add also that due to the limited multiplier (7x) on the Q8200, its quite possible that for overclocking purposes the Q6600 is a better buy, and in the end could be faster than the Q8200 due to the 9x multiplier.

Re: Q6600-q8200

As Chaos said, the q8200 is faster, but you need t think about that multiplier. Also, some older boards won't support 45nm processors.

Re: Q6600-q8200

thanks for the input guys, in the end i went for the Q8200 as i got it for £90 but i am only going to overclock it to 3.2 as i will only be using an air cooling system, this should be more than enough, also my mobo does support the 45nm chips (asus striker ii extreme 790i sli), so even if i went for the q6600 i wouldnt go past 3.2 so this seemed like the best option

Re: Q6600-q8200

Congratulations, have fun.

3.2GHZ requires an FSB of about 460mhz, which should be well within that motherboard's capabilities.
