Blank Screen/Freezing On Startup

OK, so, for a couple hours before this i was fighting with fallout 3... crashes, stuttering, all sorts of tear inducing crap. Every time i shutdown the game i got a crash, or it CTD. a couple of minutes ago, it CTD and froze my desktop. i restarted.

it booted ok... but when i logged in, the little loading bar (which usually shows for about 10 sec) showed for 2 seconds, then the screen flashes and assumes a black, purple, or sky blue hue. the PC is frozen, which i verified with the Caps-Lock key test. ive left it for 20 min and nothing happens. ive restarted 4 times and the same thing happens. Safe mode loads fine, no graphical artifacting or weirdness to be seen.

note that a couple weeks ago i had a 8800 GTX Ultra (which ive had for almost 1 1/2 years) crap out on me. my replacement was a GTX 260. no problems with it so far. im running the most recent drivers.

Re: Blank Screen/Freezing On Startup

Hmm odd. So when did this start happening? I assume it was all working fine before ? Or you saying it's happening on fallout 3 ever since you been using the 260?

Re: Blank Screen/Freezing On Startup

i just had to restart (due to the crash/freeze) and when i logged in BOOM some random colored screen.

Re: Blank Screen/Freezing On Startup

Safe mode should be using a standard windows driver, not the ones for your card specificly. (I have XP but I would imagine all versions of windows do this)

So it could be drivers, (you can re-install a fresh set in safe mode) or a card issue.... safe mode just uses the basic functions of any video card, so even a damaged one may look fine in safe mode.

Re: Blank Screen/Freezing On Startup

I wouldn't be the one to walk you through this as I don't know enough about vista or your driver package. Seems odd you can't run any .exe files, but then again, I don't know if that's a vista thing or not, though I wouldn't think that would be normal for the OS.

Can you get to device manager?

Re: Blank Screen/Freezing On Startup

Been reading along and on Vista safe mode I am not of much help either as I have never been forced to use safe mode.

Can you go into device manager through the control panel and use the "update driver" tab?
(I think that's what Ty was thinking)

Re: Blank Screen/Freezing On Startup

Sounds like a hardware problem since you had the issue with the 8800 as well. Can you try that card in another machine?

Because in safe mode as was mentioned that card isn't being used in all the resolutions and detail settings it would be in a game (or normal OS application). So that means all the GPU registers and available RAM are not being used in safe mode.

Re: Blank Screen/Freezing On Startup

dang... well... i enabled what i THOUGHT were the services needed to run the internet... and when i restarted i got a black screen with the message: "this copy of windows is not genuine". it is genuine, and ive been running it for a year and a half. safe mode gives me the same thing, and if i click any button on the text box it restarts.

ill try putting in the disk and... i dont know.. ill think of something

Re: Blank Screen/Freezing On Startup

Ok, through process of elimination, i have found the services and start up programs that cause the colored screen of death:

Services: "Windows Event Log"
"Com+ Event System"
"UPnP Device Host"
"Desktop Window Manager Session Manager"

All are "Manufactured" by Microsoft Corporation. Some of them freeze me right after login, some after 10-30 seconds at the desktop (i assume they load)

Startup Programs: Windows Sidebar
Windows Welcome Center

im not kidding you. those two i have verified by individual process of elimination. these next ones i havent tested because i dont use them, but ill put them in because at least one of them does it (i selected everything except those top two and it crashed)

Acrotray
Adobe Version Cue CS3
Desktop Tools For RIM Handhelds
conime.exe
CTxfiHlp (no idea... the command is CTXFIHLP.EXE and its located in: "HKLM\SOFTWARE\WoW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run)
Daemon Tools Pro
GrooveMoniter Utility
Software Manager (by Macrovision)
iTunes
nVidia Media Center Library
Quicktime
CommonSDK (by Sonic Solutions. no idea. i used to get error messages every time i logged in about this)
Unlocker Assistant (its a DLL Unlocker.)
MagicDisk

its working ok now... i tried to run the windows experience thingy (so i could get my aero scheme back) and it asked to start a service. i selected yes and it froze.
im going to reinstall my graphics drivers now. if any of the above things seem out of place or you know of problems with them, please post. i dont know... perhaps i should reinstall vista...

EDIT: I keep getting these weird black flickers.... usually when i open or move a window but they happen at random. the screen flickers black, usually near the bottom.

Re: Blank Screen/Freezing On Startup

Glad you made some progress but very odd.

As mentioned above now that you are out of safe mode uninstall the drivers and run a registry cleaner and AV just in case ... then reinstall the drivers.

(I don't like the whole flickering thing)

I agree. Best thing would probably be to test the graphics card in another PC, as Mac Daddy suggested.

Years ago I had an AGP slot fail, and that caused graphics card problems. Since you said your old card failed and the new one looks to be failing, it could be that the problem is something like what I had.

Re: Blank Screen/Freezing On Startup

I haven't used ccleaner in a while but that should be fine. Uninstall the drivers then use the cleaner to remove the entries and clean the registry. Then install your new drivers.

I still would feel better if you could test that card in another system but if you can't then you can't.
