Computer trouble

Hey i just built a new computer useing:
Case: Thermaltake Spedo Advance Package VI90001W2Z
PSU:Thermaltake Toughpower W0172RU 850W
Mobo:ASUS P6T Deluxe LGA 1366
CPU:Intel Core i7 940 Nehalem 2.93GHz
Video Card: VisionTek Radeon HD 4870 X2
Hard Drive 1:Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB
Hard Drive 2: Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB
DVD Drive: Sony Optiarc Black 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW
RAM:CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB DDR3 1600
I have XP home SP2 32 bit on it right now but i can reformat with Vista ultimate 64 bit

the problem i am haveing is that when i load my drivers for my video card into XP is that when i reboot it posts and goes to the XP boot screen but then after the boot screen is done it will then show me a black screen. after a min or 2 it will eather reset or show a blue screen telling me that i just had a infinte loop and it crashed. This only happens when i install my drivers for the video card other wise the rest of the computer works fine.
any suggestions???

Re: Computer trouble

have you tried any other set of drivers for your video card besides the ones you've tried so far? i'm presuming you've only tried the drivers from the CD that came with the video card as well...right? If so, then i'd definately say that you head on over to ATI's website, and in their support section, pick out the driver for your computer. give that a shot and see what happens.

if the same things keep happening, then i might be thinking it might have to be something with your video card. first, make sure that everything is properly connected and seated. take the video card out and set it back in. also, make sure that all the power adapters that go to the card are properly set/connected. if the issue persists, try another video card in your machine...another pci-e ATI card preferably...and see what happens. if the same stuff happens, then it's likely not the card, but something else. could be the MoBo. if the issue is resolved with a tester card, then it's the card you have right now is not working properly and should be replaced.

oh, and one last thing. welcome to DH!

Re: Computer trouble

well i tryed geting the updated drivers off off the visionTek site but it still refuses to boot up for me. the odd thing is that when i just use the card without drivers it does everything normal and once i instal them it fails. also would installing Vista 64bit help my problem any?

Re: Computer trouble

I can't really think of anything else besides what CD's suggested and I don't think changing the OS is going to change anything.

Something to check although I am not familiar with this mobo but have used an ASUS X38 triple PCI-Ex16 board here. In the Northbridge configuration it sets the default slot for video to PCI-E slot 2(PEG2).
(Not sure if your BIOS is set up the same way)

Re: Computer trouble

sounds like the 4870x2 is faulty to me. I assume the XP installation is clean, otherwise do a clean installation of vista since it's so much quicker to install.

If all else fails it's either the 4870x2 is somehow not getting enough power (doubt that since ur psu is certified), or the 4870x2 is faulty. You can of course also test another PSU to rule out your psu.

Try the 4870x2 in another machine with a good enough psu, or same psu to rule out the ram and mobo, and you'll have your answer.
