The death of my G7

Well... after years of faithful service, my original dark green and silver G7 died yesterday. I don't think there is anything else to do for it seeing as there is a known issue with the original ones (like this one) where the firmware freezes up and the mouse becomes unresponsive. So that leads me to the next question. Should I go with another G7, get a G5 instead or try out the Mamba from RAZER? I'm a little apprehensive about the last option seeing as they require a pretty decent chunk of money. Any other mouse suggestions would be appreciated. Right now I'm using a Logitech MX-518 that I drug out of the closest and am hating evey minute of it.

I have really loved the wireless gaming of my G7 so if I go that route I think I have maybe two options

We just had a black G7 die in the house but barely a year old so I could do an rma. I think the warranty is three years if you can dig up your receipt. That would be your best option if possible as the G7 is a very nice mouse.
I cant believe you don't like the 518 tho. Its the best mouse I've ever used and I'll be grabbing another when it dies (knock on wood)

Re: The death of my G7

You scare me procupine14, that my MX-1000 might soon go the same route. I'm surprised it still holds up so well and have found no real replacement. All other mice today have fewer and often less intelligently placed buttons, even on Logitechs own. For all the gaming goodness in the world I probably don't want to go back to a cord. Find yourself another G7 if you can. You know the goodness you get.

Yeah I hear you there its tragic

I might just do that. I do really love the G7 so I might just stick with what works

It's just outside the warranty period since I got one almost in the same week they originally came out.

The 518 is seriously waaaaaaaayyyyyyy tooo light. I always find myself struggling with it in anything that requires an immense amount of accuracy.

I might try out a G9....I'll see if my local shop has one and see how I like it in my hand. From what I gather with the G9 you pretty much either love it or hate it and I have big hands so thats always an issue when looking at mice so we shall see

Re: The death of my G7

I absolutely love my mx518, but it is one ugly mouse. They should have made it all black like in this mod someone made for it: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3054/...7cfab324fe.jpg

Anyway, wired gaming isn't as bad as you think. I used to have everything wireless, but for me it doens't really make a huge difference. As for the g9, there was a good review about it on DH some time ago, and it dropped in price too, so that good. My next mouse will probably be the ikari laser.

only issue I have is how most game menus are either way to fast or way too slow compared to actual game play when I have the DPI set high. Drives me absolutely nuts.

Pretty sure that is a game issue though. But it didn't happen with my ol' G5 (although I was only @ 2000 dpi then).

Re: The death of my G7

I have G5 (2007 edition, the blue-black) from the first date it became available.

I had no problem.

If you ran vista x64 then go for logitech instead of razer because their drivers-support is "a little-bit" mess.. (i have Lycosa and know that..)

If you afford the money of G9 and like its design then get it If not, i would suggest (based on my experience) the G5 (2007 edition).
If you have x86 OS then get anything you like. Some more dpi than 2000 will not make any difference, it's marketing trick, trust me (i have tested almost all that expensive "gaming" mice)
But you have to think first if you want wireless or wired mouse.

UPDATE

Essentially Logitech wasn't that much of a help and didn't feel the need to replace my mouse so oh well no big deal there. I had kind of figured they wouldn't.

finally got a mouse. A shiny new G9 landed on my doorstep yesterday. I haven't had time to go into great detail as far as testing it and all that but first inmpressions just playing around with it is that I really like it. At first I thought it was going to be extremely uncomfortable but actually the odd shape is a good thing

Re: The death of my G7

The g9 is a great mouse and thankfully you will probably have the newer revision. I have had a few of the earlier revision and they basically fell apart (in relation to the removable shells, there were build issues with the coating and they basically fell apart). The cord also stripped and fell apart.

Google it, loads of issues like this My G9 is falling to bits - Building and Trouble Shooting - Forums - www.atomicmpc.com.au (over 2,100,000 finds for "logitech G9 problems" on google)

Shame you didn't try out the Steelseries Ikari Laser, it feels very like the G9 but its better made.

Hope you have better luck than I did with my G9's !

Re: The death of my G7

i've got 4 G9's..... 3 others that i've sold..... i guess they are likely the newer versions cause i've my very first one that i got quite some time ago.... and it's been heavily abused due to sitting and being used on and in a place that see alot of traffic.... it's been even kicked across the room and into a wall.... not my doing, idiots walking around and hitting the wires... not paying attention.

none of them have died....

still got the orginal G5's as a matter of fact still here....

I haven't had time to go into great detail as far as testing it and all that but first inmpressions just playing around with it is that I really like it. At first I thought it was going to be extremely uncomfortable but actually the odd shape is a good thing
Hope that works well for you Bro still happy with my Ikari but a mouse is like a comfy pair of shoes ... it fits the user

Thus far the build quality is very admirable. It really fits my hand well also. This mouse is a huge improvement in gaming and daily browsing etc. The "precise grip" rough grip is garbage to me though. Its uncomfortable and I really just don't like it. But the other grip is great!

I do agree that the coatings on some logitech mouses are rubbish though. My MX518 is having the peeling problem where the rubberized coating is coming off in nice sheets. But that's ok its not that big of a deal to me.

Wish me luck on my G9 I guess!!!
