Re: Is this a good pc?

Don't buy this. Not good enough, even if you put your 8800 in it. Get something with a Core 2 Duo (that's the cpu) in and 2GB of RAM.

Re: Is this a good pc?

The PC BlueMak found has very good value for money. Unlike the first one, it's built from parts you can still find in retail, it's got a much more powerful processor, more memory, a great power supply, huge (and expensive) case... Together with a Vista Home Premium x64 (DVD included with the machine), it's a really nice deal.

If you get it don't forget to sell the provided graphics card, it won't catch much, but it will something.

Re: Is this a good pc?

Go for i7 or Phenom II system , I think 1000 should be sufficient for that. If you like to save some money you could look at quad cores like Q9950 +DDR2 ram, I don't know about pre-built PC but members will help you.

Re: Is this a good pc?

Is there a reason you say you 'can't build' a system? If you can replace a video card yourself, there is absolutely no reason you couldn't build a new system your self. You really should give building your own a thought. With your $1,000 you can build a system that will run any game currently available. Most at MAX settings, and a few at Very High settings. Here's a system that I just built for a friend of mine.

Coolermaster CM-690: $74.99
Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases
Corsair PSU: $99.99
Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply - Power Supplies
ASRock Main board: $99.99
Newegg.com - ASRock AOD790GX/128M AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards
Phenom II 940: $189.99
Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition Processor - Processors - Desktops
Corsair Memory (2 of these for 8GB): $180.00
Newegg.com - CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory
Sapphire 4870: $189.99
Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100259-1GL Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
WD 1TB HDD: $99.99
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive - Internal Hard Drives
CD/DVD Burner: $24.99
Newegg.com - LG Black 22X (CAV) DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X (CAV) DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 22X DVD±R DVD Burner - CD / DVD Burners

All of that is $959.93 from Newegg before shipping. Note that I included the video card, so since you already have that 8800 that's one thing you wouldn't need to get, which would save you some $$. The same would apply for any other parts that you might use from your old system.

Another option would be if you know someone that likes to build systems, do it for you, or better yet, have them 'walk you through' building it yourself. Shucks, I'm an "Old Fart" drawing Social Security, and I learned to build them...you can too

Any particular reason? I have personal experience with them, and have found them to be very reliable. Especially the newer boards.

The one I listed for this build is one of the better AMD790 chipset boards made. You should check out a couple of reviews of it.

I'm not a big fan of either Intel or nVidia, but for reasons OTHER than how their products perform. That looks like a righ decent system for the price. I'm not 'up' on Intel processors, so Kris or some or the other guys would help you more in that area. However, to me, it looks like that system would do everything that you are wanting to do. And, the $$ isn't hateful at all.

DUDE, no! Waste of money. Get something with a quad core CPU. preferably with i7, but others will do too.

Never owned one, but from people who did, I have heard way too many bad things to be willing to trust them.

Perhaps their recent equipment are superb, but I wouldn't buy one.

i do have a cheap dell q6600 (2.3?) with windows xp home bought it for $350-400 like 2 years ago..but for my fps games ut99,ut2k4 and cs it feels like its not performing right at all..and yes i do have it running on one core when playing single core games .idk mabey its just me but it feels like im 1/2 sec behind.then again idk if its possible but mabey its my system bottlenecking my vidcard?cause i know for the money i paid the mobo and other components cant be that great lolol.

Re: Is this a good pc?

That Dell is "not performing right" probably because, being a Dell, it is underendowed in every single aspect other than processor.

On the other hand, in the games you mentioned, almost any modern PC should perform great, so I'd suspect that it's not a hardware performance issue.

A Q6600 and an 8800GT is a fine combination for gaming. Just going for the highest GHZ isn't a great idea, as more and more games are using multiple cores and also different processors will provide different levels of performance per Hz. I would use GHZ only as a tool for comparing processors from the same model line (e.g. Q6600 vs Q6700).

Re: Is this a good pc?

no its not good.
I suggest building it yourself or have one build it for you . You already have a vga that is more than capable for gaming. I suggest getting this parts if your budget is tight
Cpu- intel core2duo 5200 $70
Memory-corsair 2gb $27(4gb is the norm this days but 2gb is enough and the memory is cheap and easy upgradeable)
Hard-disk-seagate 160gb $40
Cpu cooler-Rosewill $20
Psu -ocz 400W $50(with psu's you never go cheap since your pc health is at stake when you go cheap and this is the cheapest i suggest)
Dvd writer-Lg combo drive $25
Case-coolermaster elite $45
Motherrboard-gigabyte micro atx $53
Total cost=$330
This pc build or something similar paired with your 8800gt will allow you to play almost all games ( including graphics demanding games) up to 1680x1050 with all details set to high with only few sacrifices in detail settings in high demanding games like crysis
