I am freaking out here
Freeagent Pro 1TB. About 900GB in it. I noticed it was off when I woke up, the rest of the system is on. I tried it switch it on, nothing.
I removed the power, replugged it in, it switched on, head two or three times the noise that makes when you turn it on (the head?), not immediately one after the other, more like 10 sec apart. Then it switched off. Suggestions? I do NOT want to lose what I have there.

Re: I am freaking out here
Well... if you are not worried about the warranty I would suggest taking the drive out of the enclosure. The same thing happened to my ext. My Book WD 500GB drive. For me, my drive was working fine till I turned off my computer to rearrange some things. The drive has an auto-off feature. When I turned on the system again the drive would not power on. It did have a power button but the lights would flash on then off again. So I decided that the info on the drive was more valuable than the warranty. I broke the casing and removed the drive. It's now been running as an internal drive just fine.

Re: I am freaking out here
I tried different power cable/supply because I have a second same drive. Same thing. Now I tried the other one's usb cable and it seems to be working. I feel so much better now. I can't copy everything, but I will the important stuff and see if I can find such a cable.
But, how could the cable go wrong when it wasn't even being used over the night? No one touched it or anything either. gadabout I thought about doing that, that was close. thank you guys.

Re: I am freaking out here
USB data cable do degrade over time. I guess its the connector. Wish there was a USB data cable with latch, like that of the newer SATA cables..

Sweet that you got it sorted it. I only wish it was that easy for me at the time haha. My drive had USB and firewire connectors.

Indeed. all I know is that when next month I move back to Greece, I will go and buy a few hundrend DVDs to make copies. Or in the remote chance I have money, buy either a blue ray recorder or a iomega rev (if I win the lottery).

Re: I am freaking out here
why don't you buy another hdd for backup instead , I think it is cheaper than buying BR-Drive + Discs or DVDs

Re: I am freaking out here
i setup a machine with 2 internal 500gb seagate 7200.11's with a freeagent pro 500gb seagate with esata.... and set all drives to mirror.....
with the ICHxR intel raid controller, occasionally unplugging the esata external drive, while presenting a raid mirror problem for that drive, plugging it in.. and waiting about an hour or so while working would rebuild that drive without having to do anything at all... it's a good backup system

Re: I am freaking out here
@ Blue -- your USB data cable has the standard size on one end, and mini-USB connector on the other end, right? I'm guessing the mini-connector is more fragile...

Re: I am freaking out here
actually i've found the mini connectors to be far more robust as they are smaller components that are quite hard to destroy, where as the more fragile and not as reinforced standard usb end can be damaged quite easily presented with enough abuse.

Re: I am freaking out here
I know this is crazy but you need to back your most important stuff up to a dvd as well. One of these days you will loose everything on your hard drive, and you wont be happy. Hard drives fail all the time. Maybe even a ssd would be a smart choice as well as they can withstand a fall from your hand to the floor.

Re: I am freaking out here
imo flash drive...... critical components saved there.. the newer 16gb or larger drives are relatively cheap and fast

I prefer to save the data on audio tapes than flash drives.

I prefer to commit everything to memory. 'Course, if my memory goes, then I'm f***ed.
... What was I saying, again? Oh yeah. Backup everything to something or you'll have nothing. Now where did I put my marbles? |

Re: I am freaking out here
I have seen flash drives dying easier than a fly in a snowstorm. I don't know why people consider them safe.

Re: I am freaking out here
i see cheap flash drives dieing... but i've YET to have a single OCZ flash drive die... and i've been using them since the 1gb models showed up...
the 8gb model that i paid nearly 150+ dollars for because it was so new, (now you can get for like 25 or whatever) hasn't given me a lick of issues

Re: I am freaking out here
There is no way in hell I will use flash drives for back ups, so, no need for that.

Am I missing something? Only thing he did was ruin a HD and change the case of a USB Hub to look like a 3.5" hard drive.
