exclamation 1394 / firewire storage

I have an ADS Technologies Firewire Drive Bay with a Maxtor 80GB hard drive in it. Not sure when it happened but i can't access the drive anymore. Looking in the Device Manager I see one of the dreded yellow circles with the exclmation point for my Drive bay. I have tried to update the driver but can't find any drivers. Any help is greatly apreaciated.

Have you looked everywhere for a driver update or a different driver? Have you looked at ADS or windows website? Also have you looked for a update for your bios?

Thank You

ADS only has drivers for Windows 98 SE on tier web site and I am running XP Pro SP1.
Sorry wasn't thinking about other hardware to list when i made the orrigonal post.

My Computer:

Windows XP Pro SP1
AMD 2100+
1GB PC2700 DDR
ASUS A7V333 w/ RAID, and 1394/firewire onboard
Soundblaster Extigy
Koolance Liquid cooled case w/ processor cooler ( Sorry I forget what the model number is)
TDK 40X and 12X burners
DVD-ROM

I do update windows often using WIndows Update. I have done some searching for a driver but must not be looking in the correct places. Will check on the bios update to see if there is one. I have the newest version of the 4-in-1 drivers for my motherboard installed.

Again thanks for the info.

Try uninstalling the device from the device manager. After a reboot windows should detect the device and hopefully install the driver correctly. If it doesn't.... hopefully google can find a page or maybe a support forum that has a potential fix.

Good Luck!

Just found this at Microsoft's website.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;811077

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 811077
An IEEE 1394 Hard Disk May Not Be Recognized After You Restart the Computer
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

SYMPTOMS
If an IEEE 1394 hard disk is connected to your computer, the hard disk may not be redetected correctly after you shut down your computer. Approximately one out of five times, some IEEE 1394 hard disks are not redetected correctly when you restart your computer. When this occurs, the hard disk cannot be used by Windows until you unplug and then reconnect the hard disk's data cable. When this problem occurs, you may experience any of the following symptoms:
The hard disk is shown in Device Manager with an exclamation point in a yellow circle.
The drive letter for the hard disk is shown in My Computer, but when you try to open the hard disk, you receive an error message that is similar to:

Drive_letter:\ is not accessible. The network resource or device you are trying to access is no longer available.
The hard disk is not recognized at all.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, unplug the drive, wait from 10 to 15 seconds, and then reconnect the drive. If this does not work, turn off the computer, wait several seconds, and then turn it back on.
STATUS
Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.

Thanks all for the info. Unfornatuly I took the drive out of the External drive and tried it hooked up to an IDE port in the computer and I cna't get the bios to see it. So it might be the drive that is bad. I did however take the external drive with the hard drive still in it and tried it on another computer that had firewire and i was able to see and access the drive with no problems. ( except for the encrypted data on it, be sure to backup your private keys if you use encrypiton; i didn't but was able to get access to the data on the origonl computer again after playing with the IDE connections) for some reason when I have the hard drive hooked up to the IDE channel by itself thecomputer see's it but if i hook up the DVD-ROM also the dirve don't exist even in the bios. I have tried to get the bios to auto detect but that isn't working. next step will be to enter the hard drive info manually. will see what happnes ( BTW I think i'm giving up on the external drive case for now)
