CPU: Q8200 2.33GHz
Graphics: ATI 4850X2 1GB
RAM: 8GB 1066MHz DDR2

My old system Specs

Re: Advice needed on building a New System

look in my sig for a system in your price range..... the Q8200 isnt very competitive.... its really just a Q6600 without the OCability....

id look at the Phenom II Quads. they have greater OCability now with no issues

I recently replaced my aging Asus with a new Gigabyte addition. The EP43-UD3L edition. It supports up to 16GB of system memory.

I read a review that the guys at Atomic Magazine were able to get the Q8200 up to 3.4GHz with stock cooling. That's actually what I'll be aiming for.

doesnt really sound all that impressive... especially all the stress on the mobo from a high FSB... thats not something id do for 24/7 operation... you can break a chipset with all the added volts necessary for that

also it may be important to know that the Q8200 doesnt support Virtualization Technology ( no XP mode in Win 7) so if you want to use the XP virtual PC, you wont be able to with this CPU

Re: Advice needed on building a New System

Cool about the motherboard.

I'd consider nudging your choice of processor up to the Q8400 - the slightly higher multiplier will help with overclocking, and it supports the Q9xxx series features, including Intel VT for virtualization (you may want to fiddle with that later), minus 2Mb of cache from the Q9xxx series though (but the same 4Mb cache as the 8200). Only $20 more or so...

Re: Advice needed on building a New System

I don't know. I think I'm happy with my choices so far. I just need advice with accessories and stuff. Like adon cards and the such. Like what's cool out there and where can I get it. I'm not sure where to start. I know of some gadget sites, but they're not that impressive. As for virtualization, I've never used it before. I don't think I'll need it. Besides if I really needed XP I want to install it seperately from my new OS's.

Re: Advice needed on building a New System

very nice....

yes the Q8400 supports intel VT so youre all set with that if you want it.

the 8x multiplier means you can hit 3.4-3.5GHz with less MB stress.

before the 4850X2 wasnt a good idea as it wasnt supported by ATi but now it is fully supported by the Official Catalyst go for it!

Re: Advice needed on building a New System

The VT technology is just a future-proofing feature really at this point - might come in handy in a year or two, but the 8400 should easily get you to 3.4Ghz - I'm clocking the big brother of that chip (6Mb cache Q9400) to that exact frequency now on less than 1.25 volts - you're mileage may vary though.

Um, as for accessories, what do you want to do with the machine after you upgrade?

Bluray is a good idea. Have had problems with TV-Tuner cards in the past. A bigger screen probably wouldn't fit my space. I'll have to check on whether I need to upgrade my power supply. Probably will.

Re: Advice needed on building a New System

Looks good. One suggestion though. If you have the moneygo for an intel 9xxx series quad core. Although the 8200 is a good cpu you wont see that much difference from your old cpu. Also you might wanna go for a bit bigger psu if you are gonna overclock and considering you are gonna buy a dual gpu vga
Also why are you changing your pc so soon. Your current rig looks decent enough for everything even gaming. I suggest keep it a few more months wait for the new Cpu's from intel and the new graphics cards series from ati and nvidia ( from what it looks we will see a huge jump from the current gen of vgas to the new one as big as going from pixel and vertex to unified shaders )
BTW i have the same psu superflower but 650W and tested it with 2gtx260+q6600 and works excellent

What do you typically do with your computer? Are you big into games / media / music?

Another HDD is always a good investment, especially if all you have is that 500gb one under your sys. specs. I think Newegg has a 1tb drive for $90 this week.

not just that one but if you trust Hitachi (I do but some people don't like them) Newegg has their 1TB version on there for 79 i think?

HDD would be a good investment regardless.

My GPU is aging and doesn't say enough about me. So out it goes come Monday! My current CPU has been to 4GHz+ so I'm wanting to replace that also. Plus I like the 8200. RAM is OK, but I'll end up upgrading from that also.
On the PSU sounds good. I'll probably wait and test out my hardware on my current PSU first before replacing. If it needs to I'll get a Xigmatek 750W CrossfireX Quad SLI Certified box.

Presently I don't need an extra HDD, but it is a good idea and I do plan to get an additional 250GB or 500GB HD in the near future.
