Hi All:
I hope I'm in the right are to ask this question. A family member has a Dell computer that won't boot to Windows XP but instead keeps getting the blue screen with UNCOUNTABLE_BOOT_Volume. I tried running CHKDSK /r and Fixboot without success. Upon further testing I found the following. IDE DISK: Uncorrectable data error: Error Code 650F0244 Blocks 137661770, 165663671 and at 188855192 Is there another method I could try to get this computer to boot correctly or is it toast? There are tons of photos she'd really like to retrieve. ( Nope she didn't backup this stuff)Thanks Chops |

Re: Uncountable_Boot_Volume
go into the bios and see if you can force PIO MODE only for this drive, this may get the drive to boot.
also try a 40pin IDE connector if the bios options don't appear available. Dell board basically limit you in all forms of everything.. really irritating. Sometimes you can get a drive to auto force itself into a slower UDMA mode by setting it as slave with the master plugged into a cd-rom set as master. However with the errors related to the drive, you may have an uncorrectable corrupted file system (NTFS unrecoverable) I would also suggest downloading the Disk Tool for your drive. If it's seagate, look for seagate's Dianotic tools. It may be able to repair the sector errors or give more details on the system. Most every manufacturer has their own tools, Samsungs EL tools (may not be called EL, don't have the exact name on hand atm) or whichever.. find out what drive you got and get that manufacturers tool. also look here for more info Unmountable Boot Volume

Re: Uncountable_Boot_Volume
Hi Judas: Well I ended up installing a new drive on my sister's system. All is almost ok. Can't get the damn wireless internet to connect. Shows a strong signal but can't connect using NetGear or the default windows setup.
Fortunately I was able to use the old drive as a slave and retrieve the photos she had on it. Three days of her locking up over photos was/is about all I could take. :P Thanks again for your help. Chops |

Re: Uncountable_Boot_Volume
your very welcome.... sorry for the drive failure..
after retrieving the info off the drive.. you could try using the manufacturers tool to do a low level format.. some call them a 0 write, or full erase, or just about any number of things that means a full wipe.. sometimes doing that can repair all the problems with the drive... making it useable again.
