Thumbs Up! The Ultimate Single-Drive OS hard disk?

Hey guys
I'm currently running Vista x64 Ultimate on my Raptor 160gb (Hp-edition)

For Windows 7 (October 22nd 2009!!) I'm gonna wanna install it on a fresh hard drive.
I haven't been following the latest news on hard disk speeds and warranties etc....
so what's your opinion on the "MUST-HAVE" OS drive

I've never been a fan of RAID ...single drive is fine with me, so... what do you think?

Requirements

80GB minimum
16/32mb cache
FASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST
5-year warranty (Canada)
no firmware issues in its history (that means no 7200.11)

Re: The Ultimate Single-Drive OS hard disk?

the ultimate drive would likely be one of the top SSD likely the one intel makes or one of OCZ's top models...

expect to pay a pretty damn penny though

standard drive though, Seagate 7200.12 is still a damn nice solution.

or WD's Black eddition drives

Re: The Ultimate Single-Drive OS hard disk?

The ultimate (you'll torture your wallet though): Newegg.com - Intel X25-E Extreme SSDSA2SH064G1C5 2.5" 64GB SATA II SLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Solid State Disks

Otherwise:
Newegg.com - Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH080G1 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Solid State Disks
If you need double the capacity there is:
Newegg.com - Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH160G1C5 160GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Solid State Disks

I also heard good things about:
Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex Series OCZSSD2-1VTX120G 2.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Solid State Disks

I heard they were kind of noisy.

Re: The Ultimate Single-Drive OS hard disk?

I've got 2 1TB black editions and they run very quiet so i dunno... depends how quiet everything else in your room is !

I'm still looking at hard drives with movable parts... honestly SSD is not quite worth it yet (Price/Speed ratio)

I hear SSD's are: slower to write on; get slower as you put more files on; not quite up there in terms of reliability yet (firmware/compatibility etc...)

I'll stick to disks ... and yeah the black edition is on my short list (or anything with 1 platter)

size isn't an issue ... i don't need more than 80gb honestly because my OS drive is for, well, the OS ... and apps and 2-3 games that i keep on there at once.

Right now on my 160gb raptor, i usually have between 40 and 60gb used at once, all the time.

Re: The Ultimate Single-Drive OS hard disk?

An Intel X25-M will trounce any mechanical drive when it comes to an OS/gaming disk.

But otherwise a Vraptor.

Re: The Ultimate Single-Drive OS hard disk?

Thanks to the SSD's the Velociraptor seems less expensive today... The 150GB is a fine choice and the price is almost the same for the 75GB model. It usually comes fitted with a heatsink block that increases the size from 2.5" to 3.5", but as it's not at all necessary and sometimes acts as noise amplifier many remove it and get a smaller drive as a bonus.(a couple of different heatsink designs has been used) It's also sold without the extra metal but somehow that tends to cost extra.

I still lean more towards saving the money for a day when the good SSD's are more affordable, or get a fast enough 1TB 7200rpm drive for the extra space.
