Intel Dual Core or C2D

I am picking a new cpu for my brother , I want one that can remain at constant temps and never exceeds 40c I have MB : Gigabyte 945 S2C , He doesn't game at all may be light games like Pro evolution Soccer from time to time , I am between Intel Dual core E5200 2.5GHZ /2MB and E7200 C2D 2.6GHZ/ 3MB but the latter is more expensive by about 35$ , does it worth the money or just go with Dual core , the most thing I want to take care of the low temps as he likes to play media on his PC 24/7 (even while sleeping ) so I want a CPU that don't get overheated with the continuous work ,room temp :+30c

Re: Intel Dual Core or C2D

would be easier if we had a model of the "dual core"....

but if it's the model i think it is.. the $30+ dollars for the other one is worthwhile..

Re: Intel Dual Core or C2D

As far as I know, the C2D is much better performing than a CD. But your 350W power supply is...dangerously low.

As for him I am not planning for picking him a GPU just the integrated would be fine , and I think the C2D take less power aren't they.

But for me what do you recommend "specs at the left".

Re: Intel Dual Core or C2D

I own an E5200. Same architecture as the E7200, except for FSB (800 vs 1066) and L2 cache (2 vs 3 MB).

I seriously doubt with the light load you'll be doing that you'll see a significant difference. I'd say go for the E5200 and use the $30 savings to buy a good aftermarket CPU cooler

Re: Intel Dual Core or C2D

I don't know the exact speed/performance difference between the two, but I find it silly to buy a cheaper cpu and better cooling solution so that you overclock the cpu to make it reach the speed of the original faster cpu.
But, that is just me.

If you want a pc for gaming for now and the next couple of years, go for a quad core cpu. Be it Q, i, or AMD.

Re: Intel Dual Core or C2D

I didn't recommend any OCing to be done as the proc will just be used for playing video, music and other media files.

There is only 100Ghz difference between the E5200 and E7200. Both are 45nm Wolfdale processors.

And because comp_ali is concerned about his room temp (+30c!) and case temp (target of constant 40c is unrealistic with the stock cooler for either proc), he will definitely need to get an aftermarket CPU cooler...

Re: Intel Dual Core or C2D

350W probably means about 300 top, and at constant and at that hot room...it just doesn't feel safe to me.

About the original question, if it is only going to be used for light work then do as anonemus says, buy the cheaper one and get a more expensive cooling solution since you want it so low. Even with that though I would advice to forget this upgrade and buy an Air Conditioner. Or have the case open, buy a small floor fan (those with 3 speeds) and make it face the mainboard. That will cool it enough. But the amount of dust will be unbelievable.

I do that with my current rig blowing the dust with a blower every couple of days but I am not upgrading in the real meaning of the word Just the old one died and I am looking for a replacement as fast as I can "so I can sit on my computer without sharing ,lol"

Re: Intel Dual Core or C2D

Well then, perhaps in the long run you should consider moving to northern europe lol.

If you already do the trick with the fan and play games, then just buy the more expensive cpu. BUT, if you can find even a Q6600 at a similar (or lower) price, and your mainboard supports it, then I would advice getting that one.

i would easily grab a Q6600 over either of them.... it'd be a no brainer.. but even here.. a E7200 is far cheaper then a Q6600

Q6600 is solid the E7200 would be the better choice if he can't afford that.

The Gigabyte 945 S2C supports both chips, thankfully.

My advice, go with the E7200. Don't think about the fact that it costs $30 more. Think about the long run. If, or rather when he does buy his own graphics card he'll thank you for getting the E7200.
