Replace 8800GTS for HD4870?

Hi there,

This is the current case :P: At the moment I have a 8800GTS 512 MB from Asus. In my country I saw an ad where a guy wanted to buy the card. He said he was willing to pay 75 euro's for it (maybe i can make it 80), because he needs it for SLI.

Now there's also an ad where a guy sells a XFX HD4870 XXX for ~90 euro. Now the question: should I sell the 8800GTS for that money? And should I get the 4870 as a replacement?

Or don't sell it and wait for a later upgrade? I think the 8800GTS will never be much more worth than this.

I can also sell the 8800GTS and put my 9500GT in the PC (passive cooling though). I can't sell the 9500GT very easily because it had Vmods, so no guarantee that it will work. Because the HD4870 is still DX10 (yes, 10.1, bus still 10) I don't exactly know what to do.. DX 11 cards already come next year, and I think you will get a nice midrange-card for ~80 euro.

Now I don't game that much anymore. Some games like CoD4, Company of Heroes and Medieval Total War are fun though, but I think the 9500GT will also handle those (with a overclock ).

What should you do?

Re: Replace 8800GTS for HD4870?

If you are asking if the 4870 is worth the 10, then yes.
I would say that depending on the resolution the 4870 is even 50% faster than the 8800GTS, perhaps even more. If you play at lower resolutions then you might not see much difference, depending on the game.
Waiting for a DX11 cards is silly IMO. It will take at least another year to have games that fully support dx11 and even then they will run just fine under 10.1. It will take who knows how long till DX11 is a requirement, by that time the DX11 cards released this year will be obsolete in terms of speed, so, why worry?

Re: Replace 8800GTS for HD4870?

Hmm, that's correct, but I'm considering if I really need the power. Next year I'm going to an University (I hope ) so then I'm not at home anymore (only during the weekends). A laptop will be bought, so no need for a high-end graphics card.

It's also pity that the GTS is only worth so much money. When I bought him november 2007 it was like 290 euro's. So I don't think those tenners will be such a huge impact :P

At the moment my setup is like this:
-8800GTS for games
-9500GT for PhysX + HD content (it has a SPDIF cable : audio through HDMI).

Now my brother has a 9600GT. I can also exchange the 8800GTS for his 9600GT. So less performance for me, but the 9600GT also has a SPDIF cable (I'm planning to use my setup also as a HTPC). Then I don't need the 9500GT anymore (=less power consumption).

Arg, all those choices, damn them all :|

for the sake of a tenner why not just go for it?
even if you are going to uni, why not have the much better card in your possession, you never know what you might do with it in the future
always good to have half decent comp bits knocking about

Re: Replace 8800GTS for HD4870?

Hehe :P

I think I will sell the GTS for 75/80. Then just use the 9500GT as main (poor perfomance if you compare it to the GTS, but /care :P)

Why?
-At the moment I don't play a lot of games anymore. Most of them are old, so the 9500GT can manage.
-When I will get the HD4870, the 9500GT will be obsolete (or I need to switch to W7, but I have a legal Vista license).
-The 9500GT has passive cooling (40 degrees Celcius atm, GTS is 55 with active cooling).

When I want to play more games I always can purchase such a HD4870. They will even lower in price I think.
