"routine" upgrades :)

So last week my sisters laptop died (HP dv9000 - apparently theres plenty of issues recognised by HP that nothing is being done about!)

All prices from www.umart.com.au, I have come up with the following:

Intel ATX E7500 2.93ghz
Kingston DDR2 4G(2x2GiG) 1066Mhz HyperX
Western Digital 150G SATA II VelociRaptor
Western Digital 320G ES16 SATAII 7200 rpm
MSI GF9400GT 512M DDR2 PCI-E Low Profile
LiteON IHAS324 SATA DVD-RW 24X Black Retail
Gigabyte Superb Power Supply 550W 120mm Fan
Logitech Newtouch Keyboard 200 USB
Acer V193HQ 18.5 inch Wide LCD 5ms 10000:1 Black
Asus P5Q-Pro
The total cost for this system is around $1000AUD.

Now, this is the fun part for me . The underlined parts above (WD HDD, P5Q Pro and RAM) I am planning to swap into my current computer:

Intel Q9450 Core 2 Quad 3.2ghz
Team Dark DDR2 6G (2x1GiG and 2x2GiG) 800Mhz <--> 4GiB 1066mhz
Samsung 1TiB
WD 1 TiB
PowerColor 4870 512MiB
Asus P5K Pro <-->Asus P5Q Pro
+the WD VelociRaptor

My main question is exactly how to go about the motherboard swap..I suppose I should dismantle the whole thing and then make the necessary swaps. Then can I just replug in the harddrives and everything will be tickady-boo? Or should I reformat all of my drives before dismantling, then rebuild and then reinstall?
btw I would like to move the OS to the VelociRaptor...

any help would be much appreciated thanks

i would go for a clean install of Windows (XP, Vista, whatever...), and if you are using any other OS (Linux, Free BSD...), just update the drivers of the OS and you're ready to go...

Re: "routine" upgrades :)

Indeed, when installing a new mobo, I would definitely do a fresh install of the OS. it is better to be safe then sorry is my motto, and that goes here nicely.

That reminded me this one time i upgraded from a PIII to the PC i have now (see specs in my sig)... i basically replaced the mobo without reinstalling the OS, and yeah, installed new drivers and whatnot, but i've experienced high temps and other weird problems... and that's when i installed XP (i was using 98SE lol)

yep, is always better to fresh install when doing a major hardware upgrade

Re: "routine" upgrades :)

OK. the procedure I see in my head at the moment is clear all components out, Put the new motherboard in and plug everything back in (with new ram and harddrive). I'm not sure what happens when you install a new motherboard...Would I put in the OS CD and install that first, then once I'm in desktop put in the motherboard driver CD?

Also, how do I go about deleting an OS from a harddrive without doing a reformat

Vista/Win7 on Samsung 1TB >moved to> Vista/Win7 on VelociRaptor

I'm wanting to keep all the files unaffected on the 1TB
thanks for the replies so far people

Re: "routine" upgrades :)

Btw, get a 9500GT, HD4650, HD4670 or 9600GT. Little bit more money but a lot better

And you should really consider an AMD-system. It's cheaper in that segement, althought you can't exchange the MB's then. Why the upgrade to a P5Q if you already have a P5k?

Re: "routine" upgrades :)

It's mainly that the P5K is P35 while the P5Q is P45...Come to think of it, it was my friend who convinced me, so I trust him and I've placed the order

Even if it's not a worthwhile upgrade, this would be my only excuse to get a new one and upgrade, so I've done it

If you have the data you want to preserve AND the OS on the same partition, then it's not possible. When you want to do a fresh install of an OS, it wipes the partition where you install it.

A good idea for the next time, keep the OS on a different partition apart from all other files.
I have a separate partition for Windows + drivers needed to run the machine. All my other data is on an other partition.

well, that's not completely true... with the Hiren's Boot CD you can delete just the system folders and files (like boot.ini, autoexec.bat, C:\Program files, C:\Windows, C:\System Volume Information, etc.), and keep your other files intacted...

agree on that one... ... keep your system folders on a seperate partition... well, at least if you're using Windows...

Re: "routine" upgrades :)

I didn't originally install vista on this computer..but I do have windows 7 on a partition. So what you're saying is, if I DON'T want to keep the OS (vista in this case) but keep the files on the harddrive, I HAVE to reformat the partition which would result in a loss of data?

In otherwords I don't mind if I lose vista..I can repartition and install later. I just want the files! I can't just delete the OS files can I?

yes you can, but not while the OS (in this case, vista) is booted... you have to boot another OS that supports the NTFS file system (I assume you're using the NTFS file system) and delet the system files... here is an example pic...

for example, if i only need the OrCAD_16.2 folder, then i just delete everything else in the root folder (C:\), but do it while bootde fomr another OS (preferably, and OS that boots from a CD)...

Re: "routine" upgrades :)

Would there still be leftover registry changes or what not on the system? or would deleting those files get rid of it completely?

I have windows 7 on the same harddrive different partition, could I do it from there?

I've just realised something...It's ridiculously simple. After I've swapped the mobo and plugged in the new harddrive, I can put in my Windows 7 CD and boot/install straight away onto the VelociRaptor and from there I can delete the other OS files on the Samsung 1TB........lol
that would solve the problem of keeping my files safe, AND moving the oS to the faster VelociRaptor

yes, that would remove everything related to the OS, even the registry...

but the method you described in the previous post would work just fine...
